  • To define the expression of Adult Plant Resistance (APR) in a range of wheat cultivars in relation to environmental conditions and growth stage. 
  • To develop improved strategies for intervention with fungicides in the control of stripe rust and yellow leaf spot in susceptible and resistant wheat, and the communication of the strategies to industry stakeholders.
  • To develop a model to support growers on the relative merits of applying fungicide for disease control, which takes account of climate, expected yield, economic outlook and genetic inputs including Adult Plant Resistance (APR).

  • The overall objective is to determine the influence of strobilurin fungicide application on the nitrogen requirement for malting barley.
  • Within this overall objective there are a number of component objectives that are interrelated
  • To assess the impact of strobilurin fungicide over and above conventional triazole fungicides on nitrogen requirement for malting barley, in effect to quantify any interaction between disease management and applied nitrogen. 
  • To measure the effect of disease management using strobilurins on the yield and quality of winter wheat malting barley.
  • To calculate the cost-effectiveness of strobilurin and applied nitrogen in relation to grain quality.

A series of trials were set up in 2013 at our Inverleigh and Westmere sites to evaluate a range of commercially available varieties of barley that are either grown for malt, grown for feed or varieties that have the potential to be grown for yield but could still be accepted as malt at receivals.

1. Assess the potential yield loss/gains when increasing the seed row width for the benefits of subsequent inter‐row (no‐till) cropping;
2. To determine if nitrogen application efficiency can be increased in wider row spacing by applying the nitrogen either as an up front or in crop treatment;
3. To assess the varietal yield response to row spacing width, in response to nitrogen timing and row widths;
4. To assess weed incidence and disease pressure across each seed row width to determine crop competition factors.
