To report on the outcomes of the 2014 Rural Finance Crop Challenge.

To est alternative products to Mesurol that are commercially available both in Australia and overseas, to assess their effectiveness as bird deterrents.

To investigate options for pasture and fodder break crops for southern Victoria with an emphasis on weed control.

• To define the expression of Adult Plant Resistance (APR) in a range of wheat cultivars in relation to environmental conditions and growth stage. 
• To develop improved strategies for intervention with fungicides in the control of stripe rust and yellow leaf spot in susceptible and resistant wheat, and the communication of the strategies to industry stakeholders.
• To develop a model to support growers on the relative merits of applying fungicide for disease control, which takes account of climate, expected yield, economic outlook and genetic inputs including Adult Plant Resistance (APR).

To evaluate commercially available Foliar applied stubble breakdown products.

To determine if early season barley varieties bred for the lower rainfall locations better suited later sowing of barley when compared to Gairdner in the HRZ.

To compare different blackleg control measures in canola.

To assess the grazing and grain potential of both MacKellar winter wheat and Yerong barley.

• To assess the impact of foliar disease control on the yield and quality of different wheat varieties
• To gather further data on the agronomic performance of various wheat varieties

The overall objective is to determine the influence of strobilurin fungicide application on the nitrogen requirement for malting barley.

• The overall objective is to determine the influence of strobilurin fungicide application on the nitrogen requirement for malting barley.
• Within this overall objective there are a number of component objectives that are interrelated
• To assess the impact of strobilurin fungicide over and above conventional triazole fungicides on nitrogen requirement for malting barley, in effect to quantify any interaction between disease management and applied nitrogen. 
• To measure the effect of disease management using strobilurins on the yield and quality of winter wheat malting barley.
• To calculate the cost-effectiveness of strobilurin and applied nitrogen in relation to grain quality.

This trial evaluates the varieties with a fungicide programme to determine the yield response of the varieties to controlling foliar leaf diseases against a control of no fungicide. 

A series of trials were set up in 2013 at our Inverleigh and Westmere sites to evaluate a range of commercially available varieties of barley that are either grown for malt, grown for feed or varieties that have the potential to be grown for yield but could still be accepted as malt at receivals.

To improve grower productivity and industry sustainability through the successful adoption of improved barley cultivars through the development of improved agronomy practices and packages for new and current varietal releases and by aligning production with market and industry requirements.

• To establish whether the interaction between row spacing and nitrogen timing differs between lower and higher rainfall scenarios.

• To determine how phosphorus rates can be used to optimize canopy management, apply to wider row spacing (300mm compared to 200mm) for both dry matter production, yield and grain quality outcomes.
• To establish whether the interaction between row spacing and phosphorus rate differs between lower and higher rainfall scenarios.

• To determine how nitrogen timings developed for canopy management (based on stem elongation timings) apply to wider row spacing (300mm compared to 200mm) for both dry matter production, yield and grain quality outcomes.

To evaluate different barley varieties for yield and grain quality under both a nil foliar fungicide regime and a 3 spray fungicide regime.

This trial is one of many looking at grain yield and quality across a range of existing and new varieties. The trial also examined the effect of foliar fungicide on barley yield and grain quality.

• To compare a number of varieties that are either commercially available or close to commercial release that may be suitable for either malting or feed markets in southern Victoria.

The aim of the trial is to evaluate a number of commercially available and near release canola varieties that could be suitable growing in south west Victoria.

The canola variety trial at Inverleigh compares a number of commercially available Triazine Tolerant and Clearfield canola varieties.

This trial had the objective of examining how different crop canopies influenced the need for disease control in winter wheat.

This trial aims to test the effectiveness of various granular and liquid nitrogen products, two nitrogen timings and two nitrogen dressings on yield and grain quality.

1. Assess the potential yield loss/gains when increasing the seed row width for the benefits of subsequent inter‐row (no‐till) cropping;
2. To determine if nitrogen application efficiency can be increased in wider row spacing by applying the nitrogen either as an up front or in crop treatment;
3. To assess the varietal yield response to row spacing width, in response to nitrogen timing and row widths;
4. To assess weed incidence and disease pressure across each seed row width to determine crop competition factors.

To test a range of new winter wheat lines across southern Australia, with the aim of selecting superior genotypes.

• To determine whether nitrogen timing and dose interacts with plant populations in terms of yield, crop structure and predisposition to lodging.
• To determine the influence of N application at stem elongation versus up front N in terms of crop structure, yield components and quality parameters.
• To examine how nitrogen timing and rate influences green area and green leaf retention during grain fill (not reported in this summary).
