Stubble management and retention

Managing stubbles post-harvest is an ongoing issue that growers deal with every year in their cropping rotation. OFT contains more than 400 trials on stubble retention, management and benefits. There are over 180 published stubble management trials for wheat, 40 for barley and 35 for canola. There is also a set of more than 160 trials spanning five years from the GRDC-initiative, Maintaining profitable farming systems with retained stubble available on OFT. This set of trials includes details on harvest efficiency, stubble breakdown options, cropping sequences to manage stubble loads, sowing configurations and associated costs, and grazing and weed management strategies.

For access to additional, up-to-date information and advice on stubble management and retention, refer to these articles from the most recent GroundCover Supplement Issue:

For further details on latest stubble management strategies and trials, refer to these GRDC Update Papers:

Aims:

Issue EP farmers identified as a problem with stubble retained systems was sowing into non-wetting sands and the resulting uneven germination. The trial at Murlong (near Lock) was established in 2013 to compare how crop establishment is affected by time of sowing, sowing rate, and seed position and depth on a non-wetting sand.

whether current PA datasets can correlate with PAW

• connect variations in soil moisture with nitrogen supply

• demonstrate t… read more

Aims:

This project assists farmers in adopting improved stubble management practices by comparing the performance of two stubble
systems – full incorporation and a no-till approach – to demonstrate the impacts of each system on soil health, water penetration and crop performance.

Aims:

To test the hypothesis that incorporation of the carbon rich stubble into the soil will not necessarily increase the humus content of the soil and compare it with other stubble management systems and in particular examining the impact these systems have on the soils organic matter levels over a period of time.

Aims:

Research on the mainland has shown that sowing lentils in the inter-row in wheat stubble encourages the plant to grow taller in pursuit of sunlight, enabling easier harvest for what is normally a short crop. Although broad beans can be a tall crop, the bottom pods contain the largest beans as these set the earliest and thus have the longest time… read more

Aims:

To examine whether integrating row placement, stubble management, chickpea row spacing and a ground engaging tool would affect Fp incidence and grain yield in wheat in a chickpea–wheat sequence grown under a zero-tillage system.
