Desiccation of lentils to improve harvestability locations
Aims

To determine whether desiccation of lentils helps with harvestability.

Key messages
  • Desiccation of lentils is a practice that enables growers to bring forward the harvest date by eliminating unripe green patches, reduces the crops exposure to lodging and grain loss from unfavourable weather and reduces green material in the sample by desiccating late germinating weeds or escapes.
  • The results of this trial indicate that the time of desiccation does not have a significant influence on yield once the bottom pods have fully formed.

  • Sowing: Timing
Trial type Experimental
Trial design Replicated

Birchip 2001

Sow rate or Target density 45kg/ha
Sow date first week of June
Harvest date Not specified
Plot size Not specified
Plot replication Not specified
Other trial notes

Dissication was conducted usuing Reglone 1.5L/ha and wetter 0.1%.

All treatments were harvested on the same day.

Four treatments were applied:
1. Control – not desiccated. Harvested normally,
2. Desiccated when pods were fully formed but still green,
3. Desiccated when pods were fully formed and seed in the bottom pods could be ‘rattled’,
4. Desiccated when pods were fully formed and seed in the mid pods could be ‘rattled’
