Controlling medic prior to sowing lentils locations
Aims

To investigate best bet options for controlling medic prior to sowing lentils.

Key messages

Medic must be controlled prior to sowing lentils because there are no in-crop herbicide options available.

The best pre-sowing options coming out of this trial were:

  • cultivation prior to sowing
  • SpraySeed®
  • Roundup Power Max® plus Lexone®
  • Roundup Power Max® plus Hammer®

Roundup Power Max® alone was not very effective, and Roundup Power Max® plus Dicamba® resulted in extensive lentil damage which resulted in low yields.

Method

Crop types Grain Legume: Lentils Pasture: Medic
Treatment type(s)
  • Herbicide: Rate
  • Herbicide: Type
Trial type Experimental
Trial design Randomised,Replicated,Blocked

Berriwillock 2003 Lentils

Sow rate or Target density 45kg/ha
Sow date 17 June 2003
Harvest date Unknown
Plot size Not specified
Plot replication 4
Fertiliser

60kg/ha MAP at sowing IBS

Herbicide

Triflur 480 applied at 0.6L/ha prior to sowing in April.

Knockdown herbicide treatments were applied on June 10, seven days prior to sowing (Table 1). Lexone® was applied post sowing pre-emergent on June 25. On June 29, 21mm of rain was recorded at the site (4 days post application of Lexone® – which is perfect for this product). (see treatments)
