Soil compaction and manganese deficiency locations
Aims

To understand factors contributing to manganese deficiency in oat.

Key messages
  • Manganese deficiency was found to be less on compacted than uncompacted soils low in manganese.
  • Compacted soils had more roots than uncompacted soils.
  • It was postulated that a greater area of root surface increased the reduction and dissolution of manganous oxide and increased manganese availability.
