Lentil sowing timing x plant density, Northern Yorke Peninsula (Willamulka) and central Yorke Peninsula (Maitland), SA locations
Aims

To test the yield response of current and newly released lentil varieties to changes in plant populations and sowing dates in the main lentil growing regions of SA.

Key messages
  • Optimum plant density rates for the new lentil varieties Nipper (red) and Boomer (green) are the same as for current varieties.
  • Lower than optimum plant densities resulted in lower grain yields particularly at later sowing dates.
  • The new green lentil variety Boomer is well adapted to the more favourable lentil growing areas
  • Nipper performed similarly to Nugget and Northfield last year in the absence of foliar diseases.
