Time of sowing cereals for grazing at MAC locations
Aims

To provide data to assist in decision making of using a cereal for grazing, hay and/or grain based on seasonal conditions, while knowing the relative multipurpose performance of the cereal options.

Key messages
  • Early sowing of cereals, wheat, barley or oats, gave excellent grazing, hay or grain outcomes in 2009.
  • The barley gave similar or better all round performance than the wheat or oats.

Sow rate or Target density 180 seeds/m2 target
Sowing machinery

n paddock North 6 on Minnipa Agricultural Centre eight cereal varieties (Table 1) were sown at 3 times, 16 March (8 days after 38 mm of rain) germination was highly variable, 24 April (following 16 mm over 4 days) and 26 May (following a 30 mm event) at seeding rates calculated to achieve 180 seeds/m2 (Table 1). Plots were 12 x 1.5 m and replicated 4 times. DAP @ 60 kg/ha was applied at seeding, no further fertiliser and no weed control was applied.
