Aims

To investigate the adaptability of a range of lentil varieties and breeding lines to different sowing dates.

Key messages

Grain yields in the Mallee were very low (< 1 t/ha) but results clearly indicated the adaptability of PBA Bolt which was the highest yielding variety in 2019 at Ouyen. Sowing early achieved higher yields, but only marginally better than mid-May.
Good grain yields (>1.5 t/ha) were achieved in the Wimmera, with a mid-May being the optimum. A new breeding line, CIPAL 1504 had the highest yields overall and offers potential to maximise yields when sown early. PBA Jumbo2 again was very high yielding, equivalent to the new ‘imi’ tolerant variety PBA Hallmark XT.
In these trials, consistent with previous work there is no clear link between flowering and maturity time and grain yield, with an early line like HSI2001 performing well alongside a mid/late flowering line, CIPAL1504.
