Effect of combinations of sowing time, seed rate and herbicides on ryegrass management in wheat locations
Aims

This field trial was undertaken at Frances in South Australia, a high rainfall environment, to investigate factorial combinations of sowing time, seed rate and herbicides on the management of annual ryegrass in wheat.

Key messages
  • Herbicide treatments had a significant (P<0.001) effect on ryegrass density. The highest ryegrass plant density was observed in Boxer Gold; other herbicide treatments provided significantly greater weed control than Boxer Gold.
  • Boxer Gold treatment was also the worst performer in terms of ryegrass spike density with 223 ryegrass spikes/m2. Overwatch and Sakura + Avadex Xtra provided significantly greater suppression of ryegrass spikes than Boxer Gold. The best result was obtained where Overwatch applied before seeding was followed by Boxer Gold at 1-2 leaf stage of ryegrass.
  • Boxer Gold was the lowest yielding treatment, which was consistent with its highest ryegrass spike density. Herbicide treatments that provided greater reduction in ryegrass spike density resulted in higher wheat grain yields.
  • Overwatch followed by Boxer Gold was the highest yielding treatment in this trial (5.26 t/ha). The results of this trial highlight the importance of increasing the duration of herbicide activity in high rainfall areas such as Frances.
