Transitioning family farming businesses

The Transitioning Family Farming Businesses project proposed to facilitate a discussion in the WA grains industry regarding its future industry development requirements around the establishment of farm advisory boards. It did this through the delivery of:

• Needs analysis of the Australian grains industry regarding the development of farm advisory boards using leading farmers and key industry stakeholders in;

o a series of in-depth interviews, and

o an industry forum.

• Develop an outline of a training programme that, once developed, will support grain businesses in their implementation of an advisory board of management.

• Develop fact sheets regarding the establishment of farm advisory boards.

• Provide an opportunity for members of the project team to participate with other leading businesses at a national level through;

o Participation in the National Farm Advisory Board Forum, and

o Participation in the Family Business Australia “Family Business Directors

• Delivery of information on the establishment of farm boards at identified industry conferences and field days.

Treating production constraints on the sandy soils of upper and lower Eyre Peninsula

Why do the trial?
There are around 5 million hectares of sandy soils under agricultural production in the low to medium rainfall areas of south-eastern Australia. These soils have multiple constraints limiting production including water repellence, soil acidity, compaction and low organic carbon levels leading to poor biological cycling and nitrogen mineralisation. Estimates of the yield gap (the difference between water limiting potential and average actual crop yield) are between 1.8 and 2.1 t/ha on Upper Eyre Peninsula and as much as 2.3 t/ha on Lower Eyre Peninsula (http://yieldgapaustralia.com .au/ maps/).
In 2016, GRDC invested in a research program to help grain growers identify and overcome the primary constraints to poor crop water-use on sandy soils in the low-medium rainfall environment (CSP00203). The 'Sands Impacts' component of this project enables grower groups to test outcomes from the research component by applying targeted mitigation and amelioration interventions to overcome production constraints.

Tebuconazole significantly reduces wheat yield under terminal spring drought

The original aim of this experiment was to test whether application of foliar fungicide to crops moderately resistant/moderately susceptible to stripe rust with infection detected at GS39-45 and of average yield potential (1.5-2.5t/ha) results in a profitable yield response. However, the experiment was side-tracked by a somewhat surprising result.

The agronomic, environmental, economic and co-existence impacts of GM canola

A study was commissioned in 2008 by the Birchip Cropping Group (BCG) and Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) to assess the impacts of the first GM canola available to farmers in NSW and Victoria.

The purpose of this study was to assess at farm level the impact of GM herbicide tolerant canola on farming operations that may or may not include non-GM canola.

The year that was - 2004

It is relatively easy to describe a particular year on one’s own farm. To specify precisely what happened over our whole region is the challenging part. Far more difficult is to accurately describe the feelings of the farmers, not to mention those of their partners: the hopes, expectations, commitment, hard work, disappointments and the consequences of what happened.
