Treating production constraints on the sandy soils of upper and lower Eyre Peninsula

Why do the trial?
There are around 5 million hectares of sandy soils under agricultural production in the low to medium rainfall areas of south-eastern Australia. These soils have multiple constraints limiting production including water repellence, soil acidity, compaction and low organic carbon levels leading to poor biological cycling and nitrogen mineralisation. Estimates of the yield gap (the difference between water limiting potential and average actual crop yield) are between 1.8 and 2.1 t/ha on Upper Eyre Peninsula and as much as 2.3 t/ha on Lower Eyre Peninsula (http://yieldgapaustralia.com .au/ maps/).
In 2016, GRDC invested in a research program to help grain growers identify and overcome the primary constraints to poor crop water-use on sandy soils in the low-medium rainfall environment (CSP00203). The 'Sands Impacts' component of this project enables grower groups to test outcomes from the research component by applying targeted mitigation and amelioration interventions to overcome production constraints.

The interaction between seeding rate and row spacing of hybrid and open pollinated canola (Brassica napus) varieties on annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) growth and seed production.

The trials located at Miling and Kojonup in the grainbelt of Western Australia investigated combinations of canola variety (hybrid or open pollinated), crop row spacing (25 or 50cm) and canola seeding rate (20, 35 or 50 plants/m2). The average seedbank at the Miling and Kojonup sites were 3,630 seeds/m2 and 23,240 seeds/m2 respectively.  Annual ryegrass (ARG) establishment was reduced in hybrid canola treatments seeded at narrower 25 cm row spacing. Decreasing crop row spacing (from 50 to 25cm) and increasing canola seeding rate (from 20 to 50 plants/m2) was found to reduce ARG establishment in the absence of herbicides. At the Kojonup site, ARG seed production was reduced by hybrid varieties (Trophy) and higher plant densities (50 plants/m2). However due to the low rainfall at the Miling site, no interactions were identified. Canola yield in this study was increased in hybrid variety (Trophy) treatments especially at higher seeding rates (50 plants/m2). Interestingly, however, canola seeded at the wider row spacing (50cm) consistently out yielded the corresponding variety and seeding rate combination at the narrower 25cm row spacing. This study conducted two trials in 2018 (Mingenew and Cunderdin) and 2019 (Miling and Kojonup). Multi- environment trial analysis for the combined 2018 and 2019 data to be completed.

Trafficking a heavy Minnipa soil does not hurt crop production but beware on deep sands

This article summarises the first four years of crop performance after trafficking was imposed on a red calcareous sandy loam at Minnipa Agricultural Centre (a detailed summary of 2015, 2016 and 2017 results can be found in the 2015, 2016 and 2017 Eyre Peninsula Farming Systems Summaries, respectively). Three other trials similar in design and monitoring have also been implemented across the LRZ – on a deep sand at Loxton (SA), a brown loam near Swan Hill (Vic) and on a deep red earth at Lake Cargelligo (NSW). All these trials except Swan Hill (land ownership has changed) have been maintained for at least the five years of the project. A new trial was set up in 2018 to investigate the role of CTF on a deep sand which has been ameliorated with deep ripping.

Testing crop row placement and pre-emergence herbicide options for brome grass on Mallee sand

Brome grass is the costliest weed to grain production in the Mallee region despite herbicide resistance being relatively low. This paper brings together research trials from 2015 and 2016 addressing the potential for greater efficacy of pre-emergence herbicides on brome and the potential for better crop competition on non-wetting sands. For growers looking to often seed earlier and reduce reliance on Group B herbicides, pre-emergence herbicides can be an important part of brome management strategies but trifluralin often has limited efficacy. Previous trials at the MSF Karoonda site looking at a range of pre-emergence herbicides have shown the potential for greater than 75% brome control, but also the potential for variability under different early-season conditions. Improving crop competition can greatly improve herbicide efficacy. Other trials on non-wetting sandy soil at the Karoonda site have shown the potential for better crop establishment and large reductions in brome seed set suppression through seeding the crop on or near last year’s crop row (e.g. McBeath et al 2015). In 2016 the interactions between pre-emergence herbicide options and crop row placement were investigated.
