Lodging in rice

As growers push for maximum grain yield, lodging is becoming a significant factor in rice production, increasing the time and cost of harvest and often resulting in significant yield loss andreduced grain quality.
Several factors influence lodging susceptibility including seasonal weather, variety, sowing method, nitrogen rate and timing, plant density, water depth, time of draining and wind or rain as the crop nears maturity. Some of these factors can be managed, thus providing the opportunity to reduce crop lodging potential.

Optimising sulphur and nitrogen nutrition in canola

This project aims to determine if nitrogen supply is limiting uptake of sulphur in canola crops grown in the Riverine Plains region and whether sulphur uptake and yield is increased in canola when nitrogen is available in non-limiting quantities.
The 2017 project trial assessed the response to nitrogen and sulphur in canola crops of the Riverine Plains by determining:
• the influence of nitrogen and sulphur application on canola tissue content, yield and oil
• the fluctuation in nitrogen and sulphur content and nitrogen:sulphur ratio in the plant from stem elongation (GS31) to harvest (GS99)
• the optimum available soil nitrogen level for the region’s canola crops at varying sulphur application rates.

Influence of nitrogen and plant growth regulator application on grain yield of barley – Marrar 2017

The primary objective of PGRs is to decrease plant height to reduce lodging, however, this can also indirectly increase grain yield. If the crop is not lodged, the effect of PGR application on yield is more variable. The influence of varying levels of N and PGR timing on the grain yield of four elite barley cultivars, including the recently released RGT PlanetA, was investigated at Marrar in 2017.
