Aims

To discuss future strategies for small farmers when there is insufficient income to suppor the family from on-farm income.

Key messages

Possible strategies are:

  • move from breeding to dry sheep enterprise,
  • extend rotations and replace grain legumes with productive clover or medic pastures,
  • build good working relationships with professional contractors and be prepared to pay them according to their skill,
  • develop a positive attitude to employing casual labour or consider having a proficient student or overseas farmers on work experiences, and
  • make as much contact as possible with others who have similar goals and aspirations. Exchange ideas, help each other and adopt a really positive approach to part-time farming.
