Lentil rolling - are we flattening our yields? locations
Aims

To investigate the most effective time to roll lentils to leave the paddock in a state suitable for harvest whilst minimising the impact of the rolling operation on the crop. The trial was performed under dry- and wet-sown conditions.

Key messages

This trial indicated that rolling just prior to coleoptile emergence delivered a desirable paddock surface for harvest without impacting on yield. There have however been reported cases of shoot damage in crops when rolled at this stage.

# Treatment 1
Lentil yield (t/ha)
1 Control – not rolled (harrows were attached to the seeder) 0.55
2 Rolled immediately post sowing (the roller followed the seeder) 0.45
3 Rolled just prior to emergence (coleoptile found just below the soil surface) 0.57
4 Rolled post emergence when crop was at the 2-leaf stage 0.39
5 Rolled when crop was at the 8-leaf stage (demonstration only) 0.61
