To compare several current and new TT OP and Hybrid varieties.
Key messages
ATR Stringray was the highest yielding variety, even though it showed the least crop canopy and vigour of all varieties tested. This trait suggests it puts more resources into grain production than into crop biomass and leaf area.
The TT hybrid varieties exhibited the greatest leaf biomass and canopy closure by 21st July. However, due to a higher than ideal plant density, this heavier crop canopy did not translate into higher grain production.
The 2 new varieties from Nuseed – Stingray and Snapper, were the most profitable varieties in this trial and may re-place areas of Cobbler plantings in the future.
