Development of a procedure for diagnosis of manganese deficiency in barley locations
Aims

To determine the appropriate sampling and analysis strategy for identifiecaiton of manganese deficiency in barley.

Key messages
  • The first leaf should not be used to diagnose manganese deficiency in barley as it has a higher concentration than the youngest expanded blade.
  • Visual symptoms of manganese deficiency begin on the youngest leaves but necrosis develops slowly.
  • There was no difference in manganese concentration between the youngest expanded blade on the main stem or tillers so either could be used.
  • Chlorophyll a fluorescence was strongly correlated with manganese concentration and a useful tool for identifying manganese deficiency in barley.
