Aims

To develop a new extraction procedure for soil zinc.

Key messages
  • Most of the endogenous zinc in the soil was associated with silicates while zinc added as fertiliser was associated with iron, aluminium and manganese oxides.
  • Zinc recently added to soil in the EDTA extractable fraction decreased over time.
  • Zinc recently added to soils was found to be mor reactive than zinc already in the soil.
  • The transformaiton of reactive zinc to less reactive zinc was primrily attributed to diffucion of zinc cations into microporous solids.
  • Dryindg and rewetting at high temperature may reduce the availability of zinc in soils.
