Aims

Calibration of plant test for diagnosing zinc deficiency in wheat grown on Zn responsive soils in the Newdegate -Lake Grace district 

Key messages

A range of field experiments were conducted to calibrate a plant test for diagnosing Zn deficiency in wheat under field conditions • The combined results of 6 experiments conducted over 3 seasons indicated a diagnostic critical level of 11-12 mg Zn/kg in youngest fully emerged leaves. Whole shoot Zn concentration varied with growth stage.  Using whole shoots an growth stage was required to disgnosis the Zn

4-5 rates of soil-applied Zn, the highest rate being 4 kg Zn/ha  Zinc was drilled with plainsuperphosphate with the seed.

N applied at 40-60 kg/ha; Cu basal at 1.5 kg Cu/ha.
