Diagnosing copper deficiency by plant analyses for wheat under field conditions.
• 3 field experiments were conducted in the mallee district to calibrate a plant test for diagnosing copper deficiency in wheat grown over 3 seasons.
• The results of the experiments of Scaddan Mt Ridley area indicated a diagnostic critical level of 2,2-2. 4 mg Zn/kg in whole shoots.
For the youngest fully emerged blades (YEB) a diagnostic critical level of 1.2 mg Cu/kg at mid-tillering indicated a critical level.
•The whole shoot appeared less reliable than the YEB over the growing season..

Plots sown double width to allow continuous sampling on half as wwhole shoots, dry matter cuts and YEB were taken 150 -200 kg Superphosphate. Zinc basal applied at 1.5 kg Zn /ha as oxide ; Mo applied at 250-300 gram Mo trioxide/ha, 4 rates of copper applied as sulfate in factorial combination with- 4 rates of nitrogen applied as Agran 34 (ammonium nitrate).
