Nitrogen application on pastures locations
Aims
  • To look at nitrogen application on pasture. The focus was: “Does it pay to apply nitrogen?”
Key messages
  • Although additional nitrogen will generate extra feed the cost of application needs to be considered carefully.
  • There is no point growing feed that won’t be eaten or utilised if it is costing you to produce it.
  • Soil temperature will have a major impact on feed response.
  • Nitrate leaching can lead to soil acidification and excess nitrates can leach into waterways so ensure application rates match plant requirements.
