Nitrogen applications on pasture locations
Aims

To answer the following questions:

  1. Does it matter what form the nitrogen is in? (i.e. granular vs foliar), and
  2. Is it best to apply a little often or can you get away with just one big application?
Key messages
  • Whilst additional nitrogen will generate extra feed the cost of application needs to be considered carefully.
  • There is no point growing feed that won’t be eaten or utilised if it is costing you to produce it.
  • Soil temperature will have a major impact on feed response.
  • Nitrate leaching can lead to soil acidification and excess nitrates can leach into waterways so ensure application rates match plant requirements.
