Building resilient farming systems locations
Aims

To improve water use efficienes of crops and pasture by reducing the soil constraints that impede root growth.

Key messages
  • Spader generally produced a positive yield response (grain and biomass) on sandier soils that had previously been clay spread and /delved.
  • The inclusion of organic matter prior to spading generally improved the level of response to spading.
  • Know your soils that you are spading; (not recommended on shallow red loam soils over clay where there is a sodic A2 horizon)
