Grain yield of eighteen barley varieties sown at three different dates - Condonblin 2015 locations
Aims

To assess the performance of 18 commercial barley varieties sown at three dates during 2015.

Key messages
  • Late sowings could have a negative effect on barley yield due to heat and water stress during grain fill. In 2015 this was the key detrmining factor for grain yield.
  • While mid season varieties yielded well in the first sowing time, mid and late sowings favoured early-flowering.
  • Early sowing, early flowering crops are at risk of flowering during frost events, and sowing decsisins should be based on the phenology of teh particular variey and understanding the region's climate.
