Herbicide Crop Safety in Sorghum locations
Aims

To evaluate crop safety of herbicide mixtures in sorghum.

Key messages

Theinitialinspectionfor crop effectswas conducted ~ 2 weeks after application (17 DAA/13 DAB).There was no apparent impact from anytreatment on crop discolouration or biomass.A second inspection was conducted ~4 weeks after application (29 DAA/25 DAB). Crop height wasassessed together with an estimation of crop vigour using plot photographs assessed for crop canopy area. There was no significant difference ineitherassessmentbetween any treatment. The trial was also inspected at 58 and 105 DAA. There were no apparent differences betweentreatments at either inspection. The trial was desiccated in early March but harvest was delayed for ~4 weeks due toasuccession of rain events. A total of ~175 mm of rain wasreceived between desiccation and harvest with ~135 mm received~2-3 weeks after desiccation. The sorghum was heavily lodged at harvestwithvery low yieldsandhigh variability. There was no apparent impact from any treatment on crop yield under these conditionsbut the yield data wasvery compromised by lodging.Grain quality was analysed 3 days after harvest. There wasno significant differencebetween treatments for grain protein (~7%), grain moisture(~11%)ortestweight (~74 kg/hL).High levels of screenings (16%) were found in the untreated grain. Tordon 75-D alone or in mixture withIntervixsignificantly reduced screenings compared to the untreated (9%) with no apparent impact from any other treatment. In this trial, all herbicidetreatments appeared safe when applied toSentinel IGat the 5-leaf growth stage.
