In 2020, spring-sown chickpeas at Inverleigh achieved grain yields of 3 t/ha, which equalled autumn-sown chickpeas. Spring-sown chickpeas require less inputs in this disease-prone environment and are less likely to be waterlogged, so are an exiciting new opporutnity for a high-value pulse in the region (spring-sown pulses are occasionally grown near Hamilton but not further east). Variety choice and sowing rate will affect growth rates, which is essential to maximising grain yield potential in spring-sown conditions. |
