Aims

To assess the impact of nitrogen (N) timing with three levels of N on durum wheat grown on surface irrigation.

Key messages

• Biomass at harvest was no different between the N timing strategies. However, the higher N rates did result in more biomass and higher heads/m2.
• The later the N was applied the greater the N accumulation in the crop canopy at harvest, however this was only apparent at the higher N rates applied (i.e. greater N efficiency of applied N).
• Delayed application of nitrogen did not result in yield reduction, but lower N rates did.
• Grain protein meeting DR1 specification was only achieved by applying 300 kg N/ha at either of the later split N timings either GS30/GS32 or GS32/GS39.
• Harvest index averaged 0.40 and was higher at the lower N rates as was observed in Trial 3.
