Faba Beans Trials: Disease Management Strategies for Faba Beans Grown Under surface Irrigation (Finley) locations
Aims

To evaluate the yield influence and profitability of foliar fungicide programmes in faba beans grown under surface irrigation.

Key messages

• PBA Amberley had lower disease incidence than Fiesta VF but levels of disease were very low.
• The maximum response to foliar disease in faba beans under surface irrigation was 0.09t/ha with the more disease resistant cultivar PBA Amberley. In contrast with Fiesta VF the yield increase was 0.15t/ha, neither variety producing a significant yield increase to fungicide application.
• Crop canopy infection of chocolate spot caused by the pathogens Botrytis fabae and Botryris cinerea was approximately 10% just pre flower in Fiesta VF and less than 2% in PBA Amberley.
• The disease did not appear to develop with drier conditions prevailing in spring post flower up to November. Early the levels of disease control with tebuconazole and Veritas were relatively poor no more than 50%.
• Although the expensive fungicide strategy based on DMIs, SDHIs and QoIs was higher yielding than the tebuconazole/chlorothalonil programme it was lost money relative to the untreated (data not shown).
