Faba Beans Trials: Influence of Plant Growth Regulation on Faba Bean Yield and Profitability Under Irrigation (Finley) locations
Aims

To evaluate the yield effect of plant growth regulator (PGR) programmes in different faba bean crop densities grown under surface irrigation.

Key messages

• Experimental PGR application in irrigated faba beans gave no significant yield effects although application did influence crop height at harvest.
• Applying a single experimental PGR (FAR PGR 1) application at the start of flowering had a significant effect on plant height at harvest.
• Sequencing this earlier treatment with FAR PGR 2 at the end of flowering had no further effect on crop height.
• Reducing plant population to 9 plants/m2 reduced yield significantly compared to 22 and 32 plants/m2, increasing the population to 32 plants/m2 was significantly higher yielding than 22 plants/m2 leading to grain yields over 7t/ha.
• Reducing plant population had no significant effect on final crop height at harvest.
• Increasing plant populations resulted in a trend for higher lodging which was controlled by the single application of PGR, although differences were not statistically significant.
• Applying a single experimental PGR (FAR PGR 1) applications at the start of flowering led to a significant reduction in lodging and an eight cm reduction in crop height.
