Faba Beans Trials: Optimum Plant Population Under Sprinkler Irrigation (Kerang) locations
Aims

To assess the influence of plant population and cultivar on crop structure, dry matter production and grain yield in faba beans trials under overhead irrigation

Key messages

• Both cultivars showed a similar yield response to increasing plant population with no advantage in yield from plant populations above approximately 20 plants/m2, but significant reductions in yield associated with populations of 15 plants/m2.
• Establishment rate for the different seed rates in the trial averaged 77% with 10-36 seeds/m2 producing 8 – 27 plants/m2
• Fiesta had slightly higher biomass at early flowering but moisture stress had begun to affect the trial. Optimum yields were associated with crop canopy harvest dry matters of 11-12t/ha.
• Water use efficiency was 16.1 kg/mm
