Frost Tactics: Trial 2 Mixture high frost risk locations
Aims

To determine if mixing cereal varieites with differing maturing will help reduce risk of crop failure in a high risk zone.

Key messages

Mixing varieties with different phenologies together can reduces frost risk/damage by allowing for multiple flowering windows that can avoid a frost at different times.

Plot replication 3
Plot randomisation Split plot/ randomised complete block design
Fertiliser

80kg/ha DAP, 90kg/ha SOA, 100kg/ha Urea

Other trial notes

There is some anecodotal evidence to suggest that mixing varieties with differing phenology has the ability to he risk of crop failure from frost, however the benefit needs quanification and types of mixes need further exploration.
