Aims

To assess the value of higher nutrition input for barley and to investigate the relationship between N and yield constraints such as lodging and brackling.

Key messages

The10 kg N treatment yielded significantly higher than all other treatments except 50kg N, and was the only treatment to yield >8 t/ha.
Yield declined with additional Nitrogen.
10 units of N achieved 8.21t/ha and 290kg N achieved 7.27t/ha, this yield decline was not
due to haying off but due to excessive biomass production early in the season resulting in
lodging and brackling.
Protein levels were above 11.8% in all treatments and suggests N was not limiting yield in all
treatments.
Other grain quality parameters were not influenced by N.
