Optimising fertiliser placement to improve canola establishment and productivity in the Wimmera locations
Aims
  • To identify options for improved setup of seeding machines that reduce the risk of fertiliser toxicity impacting establishment and productivity of canola in the Wimmera.
Key messages
  • MAP placed with the seed significantly reduced canola establishment under dry sowing conditions.
  • Separating fertiliser from the seed improved plant density where machinery allowed reliable separation.
  • Disc seeders were more exposed to fertiliser toxicity risk because seed and fertiliser separation was limited.
  • Rainfall soon after sowing reduced establishment risk from fertiliser placement.
  • In P-responsive soils, moving fertiliser away from the seed improved establishment but could reduce yield if early phosphorus supply was inadequate.
