Epidemiology and management of Rhizoctonia in low and medium rainfall zones locations
Aims

The aim of the current GRDC investment ‘Epidemiology and management of Rhizoctonia in low and medium rainfall zones’ (DAW2206-006RTX) is to examine innovative management strategies for rhizoctonia management in low and medium rainfall zones, by exploring new actives (chemicals and biologicals) that can reduce rhizoctonia infection, applied either pre-sowing or in-crop, and investigating the potential of different practices (e.g. soil amelioration and deeper sowing with long coleoptile varieties, and plant fumigants) to reduce the impact of rhizoctonia.

Key messages

Poochera 2023:

  • Kastar peas performed poorly in a decile 2 season at Poochera with an average yield of only 0.26 t/ha.
  • Rhizoctonia infection on field pea roots was reduced by deep ripping undertaken 3 years previously, but amendments incorporated with the ripping had no further impact on rhizoctonia.
  • Uniform® fungicide in furrow at seeding did not reduce rhizoctonia in the 2023 crop but did in 2022 in a decile 9 season.
  • Despite using peat inoculant at seeding, nodulation for N fixation was poor.

Poochera 2022:

  • Despite no reduction in rhizoctonia disease at eight weeks, the  application of Uniform® fungicide  at seeding  increased
barley grain yield by 0.26 t/ha, possibly due to lower foliar disease or by protecting the crown roots from rhizoctonia later in the season.
There   was   a   yield improvement  of 1 t/ha in barley due to 2020 deep rip plus biochar enriched with nutrients, and deep rip with animal manure.

    Warramboo 2023:

  • Uniform in-furrow fungicide did not reduce rhizoctonia root disease in Calibre wheat in 2023.
  • Neither ripping nor uniform fungicide altered grain yield of wheat compared to the control in 2023.
  • Calibre outyielded Scepter by 0.4 t/ha in the control treatment.

Poochera 2022 Barley

Sow rate or Target density 60 kg/ha
Sowing machinery

The trial was sown with a DBS seeder using ribbon seeding boots

Sow date 13 May 2022
Harvest date Not specified
Trial design method RCBD Randomised Complete Block Design
Plot size 30m x 2m
Plot replication 3
Plot randomisation Y
Fertiliser

Starter fertiliser: DAP @ 50 kg/ha

Herbicide

The  trial  was  treated  with  a knockdown   and   soil-active herbicides   immediately   prior to seeding  and  subsequent weeds  controlled  with lntervix® mid-season.

Fungicide

In 2022, the fungicide Uniform® (active ingredients, azoxystrobin & mefenoxam) was applied to one of the seeding passes in each plot. Uniform® was applied at 400 mU ha with 85 Uha of water as a split application (on top of the seed rows and banded under the seed rows).
