Frost Tactics 2 Trial 1: Cereal high frost risk locations
Aims

To improve understanding the relationship that frost timing has on varietal phenology and time of sowing

To determine the relative risk of growing wheat compared to barley in high and moderate frost risk areas.

The plan is to combine with data collected in 2022 and 2023 to determine EP x frost risk tool

To determine if there is any benefit in mixing varieties of differing phenology as a tool of evading frost

Key messages

Choosing varieties with a phenology that shifts flowering away from when a frost is likely to occur, can reduce frost damage/risk.

Method

Crop types Cereal (Grain): Barley Cereal (Grain): Wheat
Treatment type(s)
  • Crop: Type
  • Crop: Variety
  • Sowing: Timing
Trial type Experimental
Trial design Randomised,Replicated,Blocked

Tooligie Hill 2024 Barley

Sow rate or Target density 180
Sow date Not specified
Harvest date Not specified
Plot size 1.5m x 10m
Plot replication 2
Psuedoreplication Not specified
Other trial notes

With very small differences in varietial tolerance to frost, one of the easiest management decisions a grower can make in a frosty area is to plant a variety that will flower outside the tradtional frost window. However there is still need to understand the drivers of phenology with the latest varieties and differing sowing times.

Trial impacted by any unusual or adverse factors: Frost
