Aims

The trial aimed to evaluate a range of pulse species, including lentils, lupins, field peas, vetch and faba beans, and determine which species maintains nitrogen fixation under high baseline soil nitrogen levels

Key messages
  • Faba Beans:
    • Grain yield averaged 1.53 t/ha with peak biomass of 4.01 t/ha; no yield or biomass difference between varieties or with nitrogen addition to PBA Samira.
    • FBA Ayla had the smallest seed size (49.33 g/100 seeds), while PBA Amberley had the largest (63.11 g/100 seeds).
  • Field Peas:
    • APB Bondi was the highest yielding (1.88 t/ha); Sturt was the lowest (1.42 t/ha).
    • Nitrogen addition to PBA Butler had no effect on biomass but reduced grain yield by 0.17 t/ha.
    • PBA Taylor produced the largest seed (18.89 g/100 seeds); Sturt the smallest (16.01 g/100 seeds).
  • Lentils:
    • GIA Thunder yielded highest (1.25 t/ha) and had the largest seed (5.08 g/100 seeds).
    • GIA Leader was the lowest yielding (0.83 t/ha).
    • No significant effect of nitrogen on yield or biomass for PBA Hallmark XT.
  • Lupins:
    • Albus variety Luxor yielded the lowest (1.14 t/ha) and had the lowest biomass (3.7 t/ha).
    • Murringo outperformed Luxor (1.63 t/ha), while PBA Bateman +N had the highest biomass (7.53 t/ha).
    • Albus lupins had a much larger seed size (33.93 g/100 seeds) than narrow-leaf types (16.44 g/100 seeds).
  • Vetch:
    • Timok (1.38 t/ha) and Timok +N (1.52 t/ha) were the top yielding treatments.
    • Volga (0.81 t/ha) and Studenica (0.95 t/ha) were the lowest yielding.
    • Volga had the largest seed size (8.6 g/100 seeds).
    • Early podding hay cut averaged ~5 t/ha biomass for Timok, Volga and Studenica; nitrogen had no effect on Timok biomass.
    • Rasina produced less biomass (3.9 t/ha) than other vetch varieties.
