Aims

The pulse species and variety comparison trials were set up to compare the performance of four varieties of six pulse species (chickpeas, faba beans, field peas, lentils, lupins, vetch) in the local variable rainfall environment.

Key messages

2024 Pulse Variety Trial – Key Findings

Chickpeas

  • Average yield: 2.08 t/ha. Highest: CBA Captain 2.33 t/ha, lowest: PBA Seamer 1.92 t/ha.
  • CBA Captain had the largest seed (21.35 g/100 seeds); PBA HatTrick the smallest (19.16 g/100 seeds).
  • NDVI values were similar across all varieties.

Faba Beans

  • Average yield: 3.11 t/ha. Highest: PBA Amberley 3.75 t/ha, lowest: FBA Ayla 2.44 t/ha.
  • Largest seed: PBA Nasma 75.89 g/100 seeds; smallest: PBA Amberley 65.71 g/100 seeds.
  • NDVI at flowering ranged 0.62 (FBA Ayla) to 0.67 (PBA Nasma).

Field Peas

  • Highest yield: APB Bondi 2.57 t/ha, lowest: PBA Butler 1.03 t/ha.
  • Largest seed: PBA Taylor 19.95 g/100 seeds; smallest: Sturt 14.90 g/100 seeds.
  • Sturt showed the best crop vigour and highest NDVI at both timings.

Lentils

  • Highest yield: GIA Thunder 2.34 t/ha, lowest: PBA Kelpie XT 1.64 t/ha.
  • Largest seed: PBA Kelpie XT 4.36 g/100 seeds.
  • Only small differences in NDVI between varieties.

Lupins

  • Average yield: 1.97 t/ha (narrow leaf 2.35 t/ha; albus 1.59 t/ha).
  • Highest yield: PBA Bateman 2.59 t/ha; lowest: Murringo 1.36 t/ha.
  • Seed size: Narrow leaf 15.69 g/100 seeds; albus 36.13 g/100 seeds.
  • Albus varieties, particularly MurringoA, had the highest NDVI values.

Vetch

  • Highest yields: TimokA 2.78 t/ha and Rasina 2.42 t/ha.
  • Volga produced the largest seeds (8.11 g/100 seeds) and, with Studenica, had the highest NDVI values.

Summary:
Pulse performance varied widely between species and varieties in 2024. Faba beans achieved the highest average yields, while lupins yielded the lowest. NDVI trends reflected crop vigour, with higher early-season values linked to larger biomass potential.
