Aims

The aim of this trial was to evaluate the effect of sowing date (29 April vs 28 May) on peak biomass production, grain yield, and nitrogen fixation of six pulse species in the southern Orana region.

Key messages

Peak Biomass / Dry Matter

  • Early sowing (SD1) produced more biomass for all pulse species compared with late sowing (SD2).
  • Highest DM from SD1 was recorded in PBA Nasma faba beans (13.6 t/ha) and PBA Taylor field peas (12.9 t/ha), while chickpeas and lentils produced the least.
  • Late sown (SD2) faba beans (7.7 t/ha) and field peas (8.9 t/ha) had the highest DM, with no difference between the other species.

Grain Yield

  • Faba beans, chickpeas, and lupins yielded significantly higher from early sowing; lentil, field pea, and vetch yields were similar across sowing dates.
  • SD1 PBA Nasma faba beans had the highest yield (3.98 t/ha), while Studenica vetch yielded the lowest (1.9 t/ha).
  • SD2 field peas, faba beans, and lentils yielded 2.5–3 t/ha, while CBA Captain chickpeas were lowest at 1.85 t/ha.
