2025 Geurie Vetch Variety Evaluation for Grazing and Hay locations
Aims

The trial aim is to compare six vetch varieties under different sowing dates and grazing/hay treatments to determine which procedures the bet biomass, feed quality and recovery after grazing. 

Key messages
  • Mid-April sown Benetas produced the most total biomass (graze + hay;
    9.7 t/ha) when grazed early (10 July) and then cut for hay.
  • Mid-April sown TimokA and StudenicaA produced the most biomass
    (graze only; 6.7 t/ha) compared with the other varieties (average 5.7 t/ha)
    at the mid August (late) grazing.
  • Mid-April sown vetch grazed late (13 August) did not recover sufficiently
    to enable a hay cut.
  •  Early May sown TimokA produced the most biomass (graze only; 3.8 t/ha)
    compared with the other varieties at the mid August grazing.
  • Early May sown Benetas produced the most biomass (hay only; 8.3 t/ha)
    cut for hay on 9 October.
  •  Grazing feed value (digestibility, metabolisable energy and crude protein)
    was higher in Morava and TimokA from 16 April sowing with 10 July
    grazing compared to 7 May sowing with 14 August grazing.
