This trial aimed to test mid-row banding of nitrogen in wheat after rice, in the presence and absence of waterlogging.
Key messages
The waterlogging event affected all treatments, such that both the chlorophyll content index (CCCI) and normalised difference red edge (NDRE) were similar for all treatments immediately after the water-logging event.
The topdressed treatments recovered better after the waterlogging event than the mid-row banding (MRB) treatments.
MRB showed an acceptable yield and apparent nitrogen recovery efficiency (ANRE) in both waterlogged and non-waterlogged conditions, but similar or less than N topdressing treatments. The topdressing treatments had surprisingly high ANRE.
The mid-row banded nitrogen declined during the season, presumably with nitrification and uptake. Some mid-row banded nitrogen was still evident 131 days after sowing.
The majority of the mid-row banded nitrogen was present as ammonium during the season, which allowed it survive the waterlogging event

Acknowledgments
The support of GRDC, Murray Local Land Services and Murray Irrigation Limited is acknowledged for the conduct of the 2017 experiments. The extensive services of CeRRF and valuable input of John Angus, Sam North and John Blackman is acknowledged for the 2015 - 2018 experiments. Thank you to Peter Kaylock for the use of his N Tester.
The waterlogging treatments (non-waterlogged (dry) and waterlogged (wet)) were bloocked
Plot randomisation
A split plot design, with waterlogging treatments blocked in the main plots, and nitrogen treatments randomised in the sub-plots.
Fertiliser
All treatments received MAP 1% Zn at 150 kg/ha in the seed row.
Topdressed early (TE, before the waterlogging event), topdressed late (TL, after the waterlogging event) and mid-row banded (150MRB) treatments received 290 kg/ha of Urea.
The mid-row banded (104MRB) received 190 kg/ha of Urea.
Herbicide
The site was sprayed with glyphosate 450 @ 1.6 L/ha plus Nail at 30 mL/ha and LI700 @ 350mL/100L prior to sowing.
Axial @ 300mL/ha plus Agidor @ 500mL/100L, a selective herbicide for grass weeds, was applied on July 10th.
Insecticide
Insect control was provided using Dominex Duo @ 125mL/ha to control blue-green aphids and a later application (July 19th) of Chlorpyrifos @ 1.2L/ha to control Russian Wheat Aphids.
Fungicide
MAP 1% Zn fertiliser was treated with Impact at 4 L/t for fungal suppression
Pesticide
Zinc phosphide mouse bait was spread twice during the season.
