Using soil sensors, plant tests and multispectral images to monitor nitrogen placement strategies for wheat subject to waterlogging locations
Aims

A winter wheat trial was established to assess the whole-season nitrogen (N) availability against different nitrogen placement strategies when subject to waterlogging.

Key messages

Higher apparent N recovery efficiency was recorded in the topdressed treatments than the mid-row banded treatments, particularly the one topdressed early before waterlogging (TDE). There was no real difference in the N recovery between the MRB rates (190 and 290 kg/ha).

Mallan 2017

Sow rate or Target density 85 kg/ha
Sowing machinery

Bettinson Disc Drill

Sow date 16 May 2017
Harvest date 5 December 2017
Plot size 4m x 20m
Plot replication 4
Plot randomisation A split plot design, with waterlogging treatments in the main plots, and nitrogen treatments in the sub-plots.
Fertiliser

All plots were sown with MAP 1% Zn at 150 kg/ha in the seed row.

The topdressed early (NTE), topdressed late (NTL) and mid-row banding (MRB150) plots had 290 kg/ha of Urea applied.

The mid-row banding (MRB104) had 190 kg/ha of Urea applied.

Topdressing treatments were applied between DC31-32, 150NTE before the waterlogging event and 150NTL prior to a small rainfall event.

Mid-row banding treatments were applied at sowing.

Herbicide

Glyphosate 450 at 1.6 L/ha plus Nail at 30 mL/ha and LI700 @ 350mL/100L was used to control weeds pre-sowing.

Axial at 300mL/ha plus Agidor at 500mL/100L, a selective herbicide for grass weeds, was applied on July 10th.

Insecticide

Insect control was provided using Dominex Duo at 125mL/ha to control blue-green aphids and a later application (July 19th) of Chlorpyrifos at 1.2L/ha to control Russian Wheat Aphids.

Fungicide

MAP 1% Zn was treated with Impact at 4 L/t at sowing for fungal suppression.

Pesticide

Zinc phosphide mouse bait was spread twice during the season.
