 Blackleg crown canker reduced with higher input, but this did not relate to yield, with no effect of management level on grain yield.
 45Y95 CL was the standout cultivar for yield, with an average of 6.26t/ha. This was 2.59t/ha higher yielding than the open-pollinated triazine tolerant ATR Wahoo and even 0.52t/ha higher yielding than the second-best cultivar, 45Y93 CL.

 There were small differences in blackleg leaf lesion infection on seedlings of HyTTec Trifecta, but this did not manifest into a difference in grain yield, with no effect of seed or seedling foliar fungicide on grain yield.
 Average yield of HyTTec Trifecta in this trial was 4.67t/ha.

Yields ranged from 1.5-2.1t/ha at Minyip and 2.3 to 2.7t/ha at Lubeck. Oil contents ranged from 38- 43% with no clear varietal trends. Table 1 summarises the yields grown and the source and level of blackleg resistance. Hyola 60 and Surpass 603CL had the highest mean yields, followed by AVSapphire and ATR Beacon. The yields of ATR Stubby were comparable to the other triazine tolerant varieties. ATR Stubby is an early maturing variety and would be more suited to Mallee environments. Pioneer 45C05 and Pioneer 44C11 were sown at Minyip and performed well. These varieties are suited to the northern Wimmera and southern Mallee.

• Changes in farming practices in the past 15 years have increased crop disease pressure in southern NSW.
• Annual crop surveys are important for monitoring disease incidence and severity between districts and years. They also identify emerging disease issues and provide forewarning of potential problems.
• Sclerotinia diseases were widespread in broadleaf crops across the region in 2020, especially in narrow-leaf lupin and canola crops. This will have implications in 2021 and beyond.
• Blackleg was observed in every canola crop assessed as part of the integrated disease management (IDM) crop survey.
• Canola sown into a double break scenario will potentially require pre-emptive management to minimise disease risk.
• The decision to use fungicides is not always clear and should be assessed every year, depending on your crop’s disease risk profile.

(i) In many cases, retained hybrid sowing seed resulted in more blackleg and lower grain yields than when commercial hybrid sowing seed was used. (ii) Oil content was lower in crops grown from retained sowing seed. (iii) Benefits of commercial hybrid sowing seed outweighed the cost of buying that seed.

• Sowing date and varietal phenology both affected the exposure of canola to rain days and potential disease infection.
• Early sowing increased the level of pod blackleg infection.
• Early sowing increased sclerotinia infetion in the early flowering variety Hyola 575CL but not in the slower variety Pioneer 45Y88 (CL). 
• Grain yield was higher from the later sowing date (22 April) than the early sowing date (7 April).
• Grain yild was closely correlated to total biomass accumulation, which was greater from the 22 April sowing time than 7 April sowing time.

• Occurrence of blackleg infection was generally low at Westmere in 2013.
• The ‘Rolls Royce’ treatment of Jockey seed treatment, Impact on fertiliser and two applications of Prosaro yielded significantly higher than the control (600 kg/ha difference).
• All treatments that received foliar applied Prosaro had significantly less infection at green bud compared to only seed or fertiliser fungicide or nothing.
• Prosaro’s ability to control blackleg is clear however yield results in a year with low blackleg burden make it difficult to distinguish between in furrow and foliar fungicide control.
   

• Blackleg internal infection was found to be greater in retained seed compared to the original hybrid.
• Some trials showed a yield loss when retained sowing seed was used.
• The use of farmer retained hybrid seed must be questioned based on these and other trial results.

When using the BlacklegCM App the information contained within the predictions is an indication of potential, not a guarantee for profit. The results from the York trial, where it was more of a case of minimising the loss received rather than focusing on making a profit, showed that regardless of the predications made by the app there was always going to be a loss received at this site due to poor seasonal conditions. The BlacklegCM App is an ideal fit to provide an indication of risk to a canola crop from blackleg, and the potential economic impact of this decision (positive or negative), as the user inputs the parameters that they are assessing prior to undertaking the decision to execute this plan.

While the analysis of using the BlacklegCM app as a predictive tool could not be completed for the 2020 trial results, the data collected from this season’s trial was able to show that the new technology that has been developed to further enhance the growers ability to minimize the impact of blackleg infection is effective. The results also showed that Pioneer 44Y27 (RMR) yielded higher when compared to the BASF 3000 (MSS) used in the same trial sequence which correlated with the Stingray (MR) having a greater yield across both trial sites than the Bonito (MS) under blackleg pressure, supporting the benefits of robust blackleg resistance ratings from broader trials.

Extension of the app needs to be clear that the figures that the app develops are based on the background research, the parameters put into the app and that there is still a range of variability to allow for within the system.

Outback (AGA99-04) is an early-mid variety bred by Ag-Seed Research. It is new in 2001 and will be marketed by Dovuro. It is being tested in Victoria for the first time this year. There is limited information available on this line. Hyola 60 (PACN168) is a new mid maturity hybrid line to be released by Pacific Seeds in 2001. It is being tested in Victoria for the first time. It has good early vigour, but there is limited information available. Try new varieties in conjunction with proven varieties on smaller areas. Check yield, quality results and economics of new varieties before deciding on which variety to grow. A new National Blackleg scoring system will be available soon.
