South Australian Grain Industry Trust Fund trials

The South Australian Grain Industry Trust Fund (SAGIT) was established 25 years ago, in 1991, to administer the voluntary research levy contributed by SA grain growers. SAGIT has backed research for South Australian grain growers for 25 years.

Year 2 - Improving nitrogen use efficiency via legumes in high rainfall cropping

This was the second year of a three-year trial, funded by the South Australian Grains Industry Trust (SAGIT), to evaluate the nitrogen fixation capabilities of various legume species commonly grown on Kangaroo Island.

In this second year, the trial was set up to answer the following questions:

  • Which of the four legume species had fixed the most nitrogen (N) in the 2016 season?
  • How much N did these legume crops fix?
  • How much of the N fixed by the legume was utilised by the following crop? Concurrently, how much N was lost through leaching or denitrification?

SAGIT vetch trials on EP

The aim of this project (SAGIT S914) was to:

  • Provide a genuine legume break crop option for cereal and mixed farmers in the marginal cropping areas of South Australia. Focusing on Western Eyre Peninsula, the Upper North and the Murray lands/Mallee.
  • Trial advanced common vetch lines with specific targeted traits in replicated trials in these regions of South Australia for assessment of potential new releases.
  • Validate the benefits and potential of common vetch in the targeted areas.
  • Provide farmers with high yielding alternative vetch varieties that are well adapted to sandy-alkaline soils in low rainfall environments.

Monitoring barley grass in broad acre paddocks

Barley grass continues to be a major grass weed in cereal cropping regions on upper Eyre Peninsula (EP). The use of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology to identify and assess barley grass populations in paddocks and monitor potential resistant populations may be a useful tool for farmers. This approach was tested in three paddocks on upper EP Minnipa Agricultural Centre (MAC), Minnipa Hill and Yaninee using a UAV during the 2017, 2018 and 2019 growing seasons at three different timings, with paddock transects conducted to verify grass weed density in paddocks. In 2019 grass weed escape paddocks were targeted at MAC and Condada in the final flights.

The aim of the research was to determine if the UAV imagery could monitor the grass weed populations across seasons in crops and pastures, if resistant weed patches were continually in the same area of the paddock and if the information could be useful for farmers to adopt this method to better target grass weed control.
