Variety choice was the management decision with the highest impact on grain yield and gross income compared to other management considerations.

• Rhizoctonia sererity was low in 1993.
• Cultivation of dry soil did not reduce the impact of rhizoctonia.
• Shallow sowing (2.5cm) may predispose plant roots to rhizoctonia.

At Kinnabulla, the best reduced tillage system to control rhizoctonia and increase yield was to cultivate, 5 to 10 cm below seed depth, in the week before sowing.

• If crown rot is a concern, conduct a DNA test before sowing a susceptible cereal in 2007.
• Break crops and grass free fallows are still the best practice for reducing crown rot inoculum levels.
• If inoculum levels are high, it will take at least two years free from grass and volunteers, to reduce levels significantly.

• Crown rot has become an important disease to manage in Victorian wheat crops.
• A soil test can be used to identify paddocks most at risk of crown rot.
• In the presence of medium crown rot levels crop losses can be reduced by chosing tolerant crops.

• Snail management is a three phase operation, occurring post harvest, during the growing season and at harvest.
• Knowing how many snails of each type and size are present is critical if appropriate management is to be applied.
• Snail density - above 30/m2 bait should be applied.

Barley can be successfully grown on retained wheat stubble, but it is advisable to burn wheat stubble when growing wheat on wheat. If stubble is retained then Yellow Leaf Spot can be a devastating disease in a wet winter. The most important management practices when growing a cereal on cereal are as follows:

• Select paddocks with low numbers of grass weeds.
• Retain wheat stubble for barley, burn the stubble for wheat.
• Control summer weeds to ensure summer rainfall can be used by the crop.
• Use varieties with good disease resistance such as Silverstar or Krichauff.
• Disease - select paddocks with low disease pressure (monitor the previous crop) and DNA test the paddock prior to sowing.
•  Apply sufficient nitrogen for a good crop (soil test to know how much to apply).
• Barley on barley can lead to serious problems with leaf diseases such as net blotch.

Canola can be successfully grown on cereal stubble if the stubble is removed and nutritoin (especially N) is adequte.

• March to April sown winter wheats performed comparably to main season spring wheats. Optimal time of sowing for winter wheats was late March to mid April.
• Early sowing may present opportunities to increase overall farm profitability by spreading the sowing window without excessive risk of frost and heat.
• Longsword (RAC2341) failed to perform at both sites due to unexplained sterility.

• Winter wheats sown early can match but not exceed yields of locally adapted spring wheats sown in their optimal window (eg. Scepter sown late April-early May).
• It is only advantageous to sow winter wheats early if they are replacing paddocks that would otherwise be sown too late, or used for dual purpose.
• In a very dry growing season sowing earlier than late April reduced yields when stored soil water was present after a long fallow.

• Residual herbicides can restrict crop rotation options and is often more prominent following dry seasons.
• To minimise the potential impact on the following crop it is import to understand the product that has been used, the soil pH and the amount of rainfall received from application until the time of sowing the follow crop.
• It is also highly recommended to follow and adhere to the recommendations on the product label.

• Severe leaf rust infections can cause yield losses of up to 26%.
• Grain yield, straw strength, retention, screenings and test weight are all affected by leaf rust infection.
• Growing resistant barley varieties significantly reduced the amount of leaf area affected by leaf rust as well as the associated grain yield quality.

The greatest threat to the ecological function of remnants is uncontrolled livestock access. Livestock prevent regeneration of native plants, damage the biological soil crust and increase nutrient levels in a remnant.

• The Yield Prophet uses the APSIM model to estimate wheat yields based on seasonal growing conditions and inputs.
• The outcomes of the Yield Prophet allow farmers to make better pre-sowing and in-crop management decisions which reduce risk and optimise returns.
• The Yield Prophet reports on crop growth during the season; availability of soil water and soil N; likely responses to N fertiliser; and calculates probabilities for yield and protein.
• The Yield Prophet is a web based service and accessible to subscribers and visitors on www.yieldprophet.com.au/yieldprophet.

• The APSIM wheat model was adapted and tested for southern Mallee conditions and demonstrated to be a powerful tool to evaluate risk exposure of farmers to climate variability.
• The model was tested and found to be reasonably accurate in estimating soil water based on rainfall events and also in relation to being able to simulate historical wheat yields.
• From the analysis of historical climate, using data in years after an El Nino event, the model predicts that the chance of a good yields during 2003 is about 50% (this is higher than the 33% that would be expected from the long term average), while the chance for a poor season is about a 20% (this is lower than the 33% that would be expected from the long term average).
• Our results also highlight the importance of taking into account soil water at sowing to analyse climate risk exposure in the Birchip area.

Cultivation and variety selection affects the performance of a crop when root lesion nematode numbers are high. Removing medic fallow by cultivation in October increased wheat yields significantly. Lower disturbance methods such as short cultivation (February) and direct drill did not yield as high.

When preparing farm plans in 2005 the impact of poor seasons in 2004 and 2002 will require special planning to meet the particular circumstances of individuals.

• There were no significant differences between the varieties for yield with all yielding close to the district average for this season.
• The potential Schooner replacement variety WI 3408 had higher protein than all other varieties and was too high to make malt standards.
• This site was harvested late (January 6, 2004) and produced low test weights. Generally low test weights result from frost or moisture stress although in this instance, rainfall before harvest caused changes in grain size that may have contributed. Low test weights were also observed at the Minyip site, which was also harvested after rain (January 3, 2004).
• While all varieties had low retention and would not have made Malt 1 as a result of this measure alone, WI 3586 had significantly lower retention than all other varieties. This line was expected to be a replacement for Gairdner with improved grain size.
• All varieties had acceptable screenings levels despite low retention.

The FAST systems economic analysis has provided farmer participants with some useful guidelines to help identify their business potential.

• No barley varietal differences in tolerance to metribuzin applied either pre-sowing or post-emergent have been detected in 3 years of trials on sandy loam soils at Walpeup and Woomelang.
• Crop damage from metribuzin has been known to occur in some commercial situations so label advice should be adhered to.

• During the extremely dry 2006 season the addition of micronutrients had no significant effect on crop performance and there was no benefit, in terms of grain yield, from the application of nitrogen, regardless of product.
• There is no benefit to apply micronutrients when levels are adequate at GS30 and when there is a good history of applications.

• The repeated Gairdner control plots showed variation across the site and therefore it is difficult to draw conclusions from this data.
• All varieties yielded well – especially given the below average growing season rainfall.
• All varieties had low test weight. Low test weights were also observed at the Marnoo site. The Minyip and Marnoo sites both had lower growing season rainfall and had grain discolouration as a result of rain damage before harvest, compared to the Rupanyup sites. These factors may have contributed to low test weights at the Minyip & Marnoo sites (harvested January 3 and January 6, 2004 respectively). 
• All varieties had protein levels above the malt receival standards of 12%. The high protein coupled with high yields at this site suggests high soil nitrogen levels.

• Hyola 60 was the highest yielding variety by a small margin.
• Pioneer45C05 and Pioneer 44C11. These are early maturing conventional varieties suited to the northern Wimmera and southern Mallee respectively. They may have a place for late sowing in medium to high rainfall districts.
• Within the top performing varieties at this site, there was a mix of varieties with conventional blackleg resistance and those containing resistance derived from Brassica sylvestris. This demonstrates that there are high yielding alternatives to B. sylvestris varieties, suited to this district, which carry a very much reduced risk of blackleg resistance breakdown. For example; ATRBeacon is an excellent early-mid season option with triazine tolerance, however it carries a blackleg rating of 6.5, so should be treated with Jockey if sowing in high rainfall areas.
• Although AVSapphire had significantly higher protein than other varieties tested, with 25.1%, all varieties had oil contents above 40% at this site.

Climate and production risk management can have a large impact on profit. We live in an area with highly variable rainfall from year to year and it is difficult to reliably predict winter and spring rainfall.

It is estimated that by sowing grazing oats the stocking rate can be increased from 5 DSE/ha to 8 DSE/ha, which has a financial benefit of $60/ha.

Management strategies at sowing essentially revolve around making the mice work harder to find seed.

Mulesing itself should not result in higher lamb death rates than marking alone, but there are several reasons why mulesing may cause death. The reason for significant numbers of lambs dying should be investigated, and the following list may help you identify the cause of lamb deaths. However, to accurately identify the cause of lamb deaths on a property a farm inspection and lamb post-mortem is generally required.

• There were no significant yield differences in this trial with all of the new chickpea lines producing equivalent yields to Kaniva under low disease pressure.
• Flip94-509C and Flip94-508C were very dark in colour compared to Flip94-090C and Kaniva.
• Improved ascochyta resistance will make management of these new varieties a lot easier than over the past five years, however quality and marketing will be the key to profitability with many of Australia’s markets for desi chickpeas now supplied by alternative sources.

Nitrous oxide losses from nitrogen fertiliser products compared in this trial were low: 1 g N/ha/day or less. Granular urea and granular urea plus inhibitor fertiliser provided the greatest yield benefit this season. Potential benefits from different fertiliser products will be realised if seasonal conditions and timing of plant growth are matched.

Narbon beans were evaluated at three sites in the Mallee in 1999, Birchip, Walpeup and Ultima. The new variety Tanami did not yield as well as expected. However, its lower GEC content is an important feature. Some other new accessions demonstrated that there is ample scope for further yield improvement.

Native grass pastures can be successfully established to provide grazing potential for stock.

• Native pastures can provide valuable forage for stock.
• Barley can be sown into native pasture and taken through to harvest.
• Native pasture cropping can be managed as a viable mixed farming system in the Wimmera and Mallee.

• Natrakelp applied to the foliage showed no yield advantage in any of the crop types.
• At this stage this product needs further evaluation before it is widely used.

Hindmarsh barley was one of the best varieties: it consistently produced valuable feed at both sites and had highest grain yield at Birchip (ungrazed 3.1t/ha). • In 2013, all barley varieties had a similar yield response to nitrogen (N). Commander, La Trobe and Hindmarsh were the highest yielding and subsequently the most profitable varieties.
• 120kg N/ha (260kg/ha urea) was the best rate to achieve the greatest profitability at a very N responsive site at Nhill.

The application of nitrogen increased grain yield by 0.5t/ ha, but there was no benefit from additional sulphur. At this site, money was better spent on nitrogen than on sulphur.

Grain protein was very low (7-10% protein) which is becoming an issue on sandy country despite adequate nutrition.

The timing of nitrogen and sulphur applications made no difference to crop yield or quality. Consequently, growers could reduce production and financial risk by delaying some applications and adjusting rates to the seasons.

• Data support a negative relationship between yield and protein.
• Season will always play a major role in determining protein content of grain in low rainfall areas.
• Producers should aim to maximise the opportunities to increased grain protein.

• Volatilisation losses were small on Mallee sandy loam at Walpeup where 4mm of rain fell two days after fertiliser application.
• Volatilisation losses from the application of urea to Wimmera clay was as high as 26 percent with small rainfall events (< 4mm) in the 20 days after application.
• Significant nitrogen losses were experienced when ammonium sulphate and liquid UAN were applied to Wimmera clay. Both products lost 12 percent of applied.

• All varieties responded similarly to applied nitrogen.
• Hindmash and Commander yielded well; all varieties achieved malt.

There wass no significant difference in the way varieties respond to various amounts of nitrogen (N). Results indicate that for all varieties, as N increases, yield increases incrementally. the most profitable N rate for Commander, Buloke and Hindmarsh is 80kg N/ha, whilst Gairdner was still more profitable at 120kg N/ha

• At two sites, excessive application of nitrogen caused haying off of Gairdner barley in 2002.
• Increasing nitrogen application had a greater effect on quality than yield. Yield was limited by moisture not nitrogen.

Four nitrogen fertiliser products were compared for efficacy in relation to providing the crop with sufficient N to optimize production at two sites, Birchip and Marnoo. The products compared were: granular Urea, granular Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN), liquid Urea Ammonium Nitrate (UAN) and liquid Urea. The products were applied three times (pre-sowing; at the five leaf stage and at the end of tillering).

With extremely dry conditions following both sowing on 6 June and nitrogen application, there was no response to nitrogen application in this trial, despite the low level of available soil nitrogen (52kg/ha N, 0-130cm) recorded at the start of the season. • With yields in the range of 1.3-1.6t/ha, there was no response to applied nitrogen regardless of the timing or product used. • There was no evidence to indicate that, under these conditions, liquid fertiliser (Easy N - 32% w/w (16% urea, 8% nitrate and 8% ammonium) or Green Urea 14 (an agrotain urease inhibitor coated urea) were superior to straight urea (46%N).

The site at the BCDS looked the most promising of all 14 sites, unfortunately the frosts in late September and early October reaped havoc on grain yield.

There was a significatn difference (P < 0.05) in the yield and protein levels between varieties but there was no difference in yield and protein due to the different fertiliser treatments within a variety.

To manage N2O emissions in low to medium rainfall environments, growers need to match nitrogen supply to crop demand. Lowest emissions were measured where nitrogen levels were least, while highest emissions occurred where nitrogen levels were greatest. Applying late nitrogen to increase wheat protein is not economic when segregation price differentials are small.

• Noodle wheat production was not suited to this paddock due to the high soil nitrogen levels. Milling wheat production was a much better choice for this paddock as evidenced by the performance of Mitre. High soil nitrogen levels resulted in protein levels too high for the noodle varieties to achieve their ASWN potential for all plots at the site except Lorikeet with no urea at sowing.

Harvest contrac prices can be high, and depend on the quality of the windrows.

• Sowing date, uniform sowing depth and weed control are just as important to maintain yields in a wide row system as in conventional systems.
• The results in 2001 indicate that the wide-row system has potential at the yield levles typically achieved in the central-northern Mallee.

The main messages from BCG work are presented in this report.

The basic message has been to 'wherever possible maintain your normal management practieces'. Changing rotations, cutting back on yield, generating inputs and taking short cuts only serves to increase the risk of missing out on a return to profitable growing conditions this year.

The main messages from the trial work undertaken in 2005 for nutrient management in 2006 are summaried in this report.

In a year with an outlook of a dry finish and lack of grain fill due to limited moisture, high temperatures or frost, the ability to take advantage of early crop growth through oaten hay is a reasonable risk management tool to consider.

High yielding export quality oaten hay crops were successfully grown in the Charlton district (Echidna yielded 6.5 t/ha dry matter) in the 2001 season.

Oaten hay production is an opportunity to intensify the cereal proportion of a cropping rotation without increasing root disease burdens provided a CCN resistant variety is grown. With current prices of $120-140/t oaten hay production is a viable option.

• Hay crops can be used for both risk management and as part of an integrated herbicide resistant grass management program.
• Paddock selection is important. It is best to select a paddock with a low weed burden; there are limits to the amount of ryegrass that is accepted for export oaten hay.
• For quality oaten hay it is important to minimize stem thickness; this can be achieved by the use of high seeding rates. Cross sowing may be necessary to ensure windrows are supported by stubble for bailing, especially if sowing using wide row spacings.

Brassica juncea, a canola quality mustard, is being developed to meet canola standards so that it can be received with canola and marketed under the same streams. To be canola quality, mustard must meet the <2% erucic acid level and the <30 micromoles/g meal level, as well as have high oleic acid levels. The three lines tested at Birchip, JN004, JO006 and JP056, have appropriate erucic acid levels, and are well adapted to the low rainfall environments.

• There is firm evidence that, in addition to climate variability, there are also changes (trends) in key climate indices (i.e. rainfall and temperature) resulting from human activity, which will have important consequences on agricultural production in Australia.
• Good risk managers need to consider both climate variability and change in their on-farm plans in order to ensure future sustainability.
• Under changed climate conditions (up to 1.1oC warmer and up to 6% drier) expected around 2030 simulation studies show that in the Wimmera Mallee region yield losses can be offset through improved residue management and longer fallows.

• There is now firm evidence that, in addition to climate variability, there are also changes (trends) in key climate indices (i.e. rainfall and temperature) resulting from human activity.
• This means that good risk managers need to consider both climate variability and change in their on-farm plans in order to ensure future sustainability.
• Many of the actions required for adapting to climate change are extensions of those currently used for managing climate variability.

The response to nitrogen in these trials should encourge the application of urea for wheat crops in these regions when the deep soil N test shows that the soil is low in available N prior to sowing in relation to the target yield set for the crop.

Phosphorous fertiliser is rapidly fixed into unavailable forms after sowing when the soil wets up in winter. There were no phosphorous fertiliser responses in a wide range of crops on sites with good fertiliser histories. At the Donald site, which has a poor fertiliser history, the phosphorous responses were significant, especially for the pulse crops, less for barley, and none for wheat.

Fertiliser P trials were undertaken on wheat, barley, canola, field pea, lentil and faba beans at four sites over two seasons (1999 and 2000). Fertiliser P is rapidly fixed and becomes unavailable to plants on neutral to alkaline soils. P responses over the two seasons indicate that for wheat, barley, canola and field pea the responses to P fertiliser were insignificant or if a response did occur it occurred from 0 to 6 kg P/ha. It appears that faba beans do respond to higher rates of P (up to 18 kg P/ha), which was a consistent result in both years. It is not clear how lentils respond to P fertiliser. It is recommended to base a P fertiliser application rate on:

• long-term P balance (P fertiliser applied minus the P exported in grain),
• soil test result (soil P test of above 15ppm Colwell appears to indicate adequate Phosphorus levels), and
• whole farm expenditure (not more than 10 to 12% of gross farm income expenditure on fertiliser (inclusive of N and S) - as an average of a minimum of 5 years).

• Phosphorus response trials were undertaken on barley, wheat, canola, lentils, faba beans and field peas at four sites across the Wimmera and Mallee over the past three seasons.
• There was no consistent response to the rate of phosphorus applied in wheat, barley, canola, lentils and field peas on sites that had a good fertiliser history (a positive P balance) and good P fertility (Colwell P of 15ppm or more). Faba beans were the exception responding to higher rates of phosphorus (up to 18 kg P/ha) – this was a consistent result over the 2000 and 2001 seasons.
• At the Donald sites, phosphorus rate significantly increased yield. This result was not unexpected as the trials were typically located on soils that were low in fertility (Colwell P <12ppm) and acidic (pH BBwaterB = 6.3).
• Reducing phosphorus inputs to between 6 and 12 kg P/ha will not compromise short-term soil fertility and crop production on sites with good fertiliser history and soil P fertility but further research needs to be conducted investigating the long-term implications of this strategy.

• Lentils were better at establishing and reaching target plant densities than canola.
• Canola was considerably more responsive to converting increasing sowing densities into yield than lentils.
• Seeder type had no consistent effect on establishment and yield.
• The differences in yield response to plant numbers suggests that it is more critical to get it right in canola than lentils.

• Once you have decided on how much crop to put in, the greatest impacts on your bottom line will come from how you managed the crop and what it cost you.
• Making in-crop decisions on inputs has to be done in context of the likley yield.

Nufarm are currently developing a new controlled release formulation of Triflualin.

There are two main forms of ‘precision agriculture’: guidance, to improve accuracy, decrease overlapping, improve efficiency etc (the benefits are well understood for guidance); and variable rate agriculture. Variable rate agriculture

The selection of a herbicide in newly sown pasture is a metter of required weed control, level of acceptable damage to the pasture and cost.

Lathyrus stood out as a good producer of dry matter when sown early. It also appears to be less affected by insects and more tolerant to post emergent herbicides compared to Morava vetch.

Livestock in farming systems provide a level of risk management compared to a solely cropping enterprise. Average stocking rates on pastures are substantially lower than could potentially be achieved through the adoption of more appropriate pastures. The lack of suitable pastures is due to perceptions of poor economic returns as a result of difficulties with the establishment and persistence of pastures, and problems with the seasonal nature of pasture production leading to excessive production in the spring and lack of production in the autumn.

• August pasture termination may produce water and nitrogen benefits for the following crop, compared to leaving the pasture to grow, but these may be neutralised by dry summers and other limitations in an average growing season.
• Termination timing is only as important as you abiliy to capitalise on the benefits with either livestock (extra pasture growth) or crop (extra water and nitrogen).

• Alkaline, calcareous, sandy soils in low rainfall (300-350mm annually) regions can support a wide range of pasture species.
• Cereals and grain legume varieties provided the highest volume of production in low rainfall years such as this year.

• Establishment of perennial pastures is relatively expensive and represents a high risk activity during years with very low spring rainfall. • Ideally Lucerne and pasture grasses should be established by sowing early in paddocks with low weed populations, such as may occur after several years of a well managed cropping program.

Phenoxy herbicide rates and application times are generally based on crop leaf number. This however, does not take into account the fact that varieties with different maturity lengths will differ in leaf number ie. shorter season wheats generally produce less leaves than long season wheats.

A significatn yield increase was observed on the Barber site from the application of 10kg P/ha compared with the zero and 5kg P/ha treatments.

• Different crop types displayed varying phosphorus (P) use efficiencies (soil and fertiliser demand) under P deficient conditions.
• Crop types that have previously shown to be P efficient did not display the same traits in neutral to slightly alkaline soils.
• Soil testing can have significant economic benefits if the right test is used.

• Phosphorus is an essential nutrient for plant development which cannot be effectively applied post sowing. Because of this it is imperative that decisions on its application are made now.

Previous trials and demonstrations have highlighted zinc deficiencies in both cereals and pulses, which could provide farmers substantial profits over the cost of zinc. A trial conducted on wheat at Sea Lake in 2000, on a highly responsive soil type with a poor zinc history clearly defined responses to zinc and demonstrated that responses to phosphorus or nitrogen cannot be achieved if zinc is deficient. This trial also endorsed the conclusions of trials conducted in 1999 that adequate zinc enriched granular fertiliser should be regularly applied
