This Demonstration forms part of the Grain & Graze II project looking at the relative merits of grazing canola and cereal crops. This demonstration looks to assess whether the effects of grazing wheat with sheep during the growing season. Factors being assessed are Yield & quality, dry matter production and grazing value.

To determine the impact that grazing of crops in winter had on subsequent grain yield and quality, production factors such as weeds, disease and nutrition, and livestock carrying capacity.

Demonstration to evaluate new forage options against commonly used graze and grain options.

To demonstrate inter-row pasture options for the low rainfall zone.

The main aims of this demonstration are to:

• Increase farmer knowledge about the N2O emissions made from fertiliser and legumes;  
• Reveal options available to reduce N20 emissions; and
• Provide information about nutrient use efficiency to maximise productivity.

To implement the findings of previous work conducted on the establishment of native perennial grasses in the Upper North.

Tol trial a range of practices to increase sequestration of soil carbon, including:

• 1.Unviable cropping land managed for the introduction and/or increased levels of perennial component in pastures ( 3 sites);
• 2.Implementation of rotational grazing managed pasture for increased levels of cover and biomass (3 sites);
• 3.Degraded land managed for the introduction and/or increased levels of perennial component in pastures (4 sites); and
• 4.Land managed for the introduction and/or increased levels of perennial component in pastures (3 sites).

To record experiences of farmers using rotational grazing on stubbles (putting high numbers of stock on paddocks for short periods of time) suggest that more surface cover remains and less tracking is evident compared to paddocks where a lower stocking density for longer periods is used.

This project is investigating where and how perennials, including fodder shrub species can fit into our farming systems and the benefits they can have on production andsustainability.

The key aims of this project have been to develop agronomic guidelines and seeding technology solutions to allow for increased stubble retention practices, thereby reducing the dependence on burning. 

The aim of this study was to determine the optimal animal production and economic stocking rate for lambs grazing dual purpose wheat crops over winter and to assess the effects of different stocking rates and grazing intensity on subsequent plant growth and final

• Assess the potential of canola for grazing and grain production.

The Grain and Graze program was keen to test the findings from extensive trial work with a group of farmers to see if the theories of grazing cereals provided the desired response under a range of conditions and farming situations. The financial gain from the exercise was also calculated.

• To assess the grain and forage production of winter wheat following simulated grazing at 2 different crop growth stages.

The aim of this trial was to determine potential grain yield loss from a late grazing (cutting) relative to the increased grazing production.

To answer some key questions about lucerne in the crop rotation:

• What is the impact of the lucerne phase on subsequent crops regarding yield, quality, soil moisture and nitrogen?
• What is the best time to remove lucerne - spring or autumn?
• What is the best method of removing lucerne?
• What is the best crop rotation following lucerne?
• What are the management implications of these insights from a farming system?
   

To demonstrate and evaluate a range of management strategies that could effectively reduce damage to emerging canola during establishment caused by slug species in the High Rainfall Zone (HRZ)

To take a step back and look at how important rainfall and variety choice are in grazing crops to maintain grain yield.

A further aim was to compare a commercial plant density for dual purpose and grain‐only production with reduced rates comparable to that used for early sowing in the UK.

To test the vernalisation theory and answer questions around grazing management.

• To determine if grazing alone can reduce Septoria tritici blotch (STB) disease pressure.
• To determine how long flutriafol, applied to the fertiliser, can control STB into the season.
• To assess the efficacy of the preliminary SDHI seed treatment to control STB.
• To assess whether the effectiveness of early control with grazing or seed treatments is improved with a foliar application of the foliar fungicide Opera (pryaclostrobin and epoxiconazole) at GS39 (flag leaf emergence).

• To compare grain yields of early sown Revenue wheat (March) with grazed (cut) wheat sown at the same time and that sown at a more traditional time, May.
• The effect of a plant growth regulator (PGR) on uncut early sown plots was also evaluated.
   

To determine the impact of grazing on soil condition and weed populations.  This report is on findings after two years of grazing.
