The KI Feral Pig Eradication project was funded to take advantage of this one silver lining of the fires. The program is a collaboration between PIRSA, Kangaroo Island Landscape Board and KI National Parks and Wildlife Service working together with the KI community, including AgKI, Livestock SA, KI Plantation Timbers and KI Council.

The objective of the trial was to test varieties for their resistance to rust along with their yield qualities against locally grown varieties.

Investigate the effect of row spacing up to 66cm in two hybrid varieties at two different seeding rates to determine if row spacing or plant density can ameliorate the effect of sclerotinia stem rot, with or without fungicide application.

Native budworm actively feeding on cereals has not been an issue for growers or industry in the past, and considering the recent detections, growers and western region industry networks have voiced that they would like support on this issue, especially regarding sampling techniques and spray thresholds. To achieve this, we investigated this new behavioural trend and the population numbers required to cause economic yield losses to determine if and when management is required in non-traditional cereal hosts.

Through pheromone-based moth trapping, crop inspections, glasshouse trials and a field cage trial, we investigated the behaviour of H. punctigera moths and larvae on, and potential economic damage to, wheat in the northern grainbelt of Western Australia.

The objective of this survey is to understand if HWSC systems influence in mice populations in paddocks.

Properties with mice activity around sheds or houses were targeted.

These trials tested the repellence of some products being promoted or anecdotally observed to repel snails in broad acre crops. These products have no supporting data nor are they registered for snail repellence in crops.

The aim of this work was to use a range of tools to determine if we can be confident that the SclerotiniaCM app is producing reliable outputs that will help canola growers make informed management decisions in a given season

Some districts in NSW and Victoria are known to frequently develop Sclerotinia stem rot. The purpose of conducting the petal survey was to identify if there are significant differences in the level of petal infestation between districts where the disease develops frequently, compared with those districts where the disease develops once every few years. This information will indicate what influences disease development, background inoculum levels or environmental conditions, or both. 

To benchmark yield potential across a range of growing environments in the NGR of NSW, over two consecutive seasons, and to quantify the impact of genotype, management and environment on yield.

The aims of these experiments were to determine:

• the potential effect of natural enemies on insect pests

• any long-term effects from insecticide seed treatments on natural enemies

• any differences in natural enemies and pest distribution.
 

Cereal disease management and diagnostics: What we learned in 2021 to improve management in 2022

Chickpea disease management

The aim of the experiment was to examine the effect of crown rot on yield in 12 bread wheats, one durum wheat and five barley varieties of differing tolerance levels in southern NSW (sNSW).

To better understand and quantify potential production losses incurred from foliar, crown and root diseases by developing response curves.

To report on the 2016 season assessment of the capability of this test to:

1. detect Pm in soil from commercial paddocks, and
2. predict the risk of PRR disease and potential yield losses in chickpea.

This study aimed to compare the efficacy of three different foliar fungicides in managing sclerotinia stem rot in canola.

 To determine the various causes and to address concerns around fusarium head blight (FHB) infections.

 An international research collaboration with CIMMYT (International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center, Mexico) has developed new wheat germplasm carrying Karnal bunt resistance genes. These will be made available 
to Australian breeders for variety development. As a prerequisite, this study was carried out to determine what penalties could affect yield or its components due to incorporating Karnal bunt resistance. 

 To compare the relative impact of CRR and CR on wheat yield and determine if mixed infection exacerbates losses.
