Oats trials

To investigate the idea of Pasture Cropping (PC), which involves seeding a crop into an existing summer-active pasture stand without killing the pasture.

To discuss nitrogen inputs from pasture and patterns of release for crops.

This trial is the second year of the trial series comparing the performance and response of two breeding lines (03198-18, named Kowari , and 06204-16, named Bilby ) and two benchmark varieties (Carrolup and Williams ) to changes in nitrogen and plant density in medium rainfall environments. This research builds on the trials conducted at Holt Rock in 2014-2016.

Under the new NVT Pathology Services Agreement 2019–23, the total number of diseases and crop species being screened in NSW has increased. Eight different crop types, both cereal and broadleaf, are annually screened for a total of 17 different diseases across three climatically and agronomically diverse sites within NSW (NSW DPI research stations based at Grafton, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga).

To see whether green manure a viable management option (in terms of maintenance of ground cover and other agronomic benefits) as we know that terminating cover crops will result in 100% seed set control providing that the crop is effectively killed at an appropriate time.

To provide localised data on the yield and quality response of released and near release oats lines.

To assess the competiveness of 18 commercial barley varieties for their capacity to suppress or out-compete weeds during the season.

T evaluate the influence of seeding density and nitrogen (N) applied at sowing on plant establishment, phenology, grain yield and quality of four commercial milling oat varieties.
 

Cereal disease management and diagnostics: What we learned in 2021 to improve management in 2022

To report on 2003 crop monitoring.

• To investigate the impact of different stubble treatments imposed towards the end of the fallow have on the yield of wheat, barley and oats.
• To evaluate any varietal responses within crop species to the impact of the different stubble treatments.

This study serves to identify the crown rot risk to the industry and link with research on rotation impacts and grower practice at a whole-paddock scale.

To assess the influence of sowing date and species phenology on yield dynamics of barley, oats and wheat in frost conditions

To satisfy the questions of local farmers.

• Can you sustainably continuously crop this land?
• Will we get herbicide resistant weeds with continuous cropping?
• Which crop rotations are the most profitable?
• What is happening to nitrogen in the rotations?
• What impact does continuous cropping have on soil chemistry and soil water levels?

To screen a range of minor winter crops for Pratylenchus thornei resistance: in field pea, triticale, oats canary seed, linseed and fallow.

• What if there was a simple way to improve the top soil depth to encourage plants to grow deeper root systems?
• Could we grow the massive crops you seen grown overseas where they measure top soil in feet not inches?

To quantify and potentially exploit the variation in nutritive value of a range of cereal grains that come on to the feed market in South Australia to increase grain trading options for grain growers.

To compare previous best bet herbicide treatments with newer herbicides such as Affinity, Precept, Conclude, Torpedo and Velocity on the control of bifora.

The expected outcome of the project is that by 2021, growers in the MRZ of the South East and their advisors will have access to new relevant information on diverse crop rotations and integrated farming systems, particularity the incorporation of a pasture phase. 

To identify the current best oaten hay variety for the Kimba area to maximise production and quality.

Farmers in the Kimba area have been producing oaten hay for export for several years. The industry has been expanding, with dedicated storage facilities established in recent years on the outskirts of Kimba. To maximise production and quality, the Buckleboo Farm Improvement Group wanted to identify the best current oaten hay variety for the Kimba area.

To assess triticale and oat varieties for grain yield and quality possible.

To establish nutritional requirements of oat on Eyre Peninsula.

To evaluate different commercially available forage crop varieties for dry matter production and feed quality

To measure the hay yield of 6 oat varieties and lines against the current industry standards.

To assess the financial consequences of changing farming systems and inputs, specifically investigating the impact of changing break crop type and reduced fertiliser inputs on subsequent wheat yields and longer term profitability.

• To demonstrate and refine the technique to suit the many mixed farmers on Kangaroo Island.

A series of multi-year field trials were conducted at sites in SA, Victoria and NSW to determine key soil, environment and management factors influencing the pathogen dynamics and disease impact in cereal crops.

To provide grain growers across the south east (SE) region with access to real-time soil moisture data through a website that pulls together information from the existing MacKillop Farm Management Group (MFMG) network and the South East Natural Resource Management (SENRM) weather station network.
 

To evaluate a a range of Heritage seed winter feed options under specific local conditions

To present options for increasing zinc efficiency of cereals through breeding.

To evaulate the nitrogen fixing capacity of various legume species grown on Kangaroo Island.

To evaluate which cereal species and variety will produce the most early feed.

To provide data to assist in decision making when planning to use a field crop as a potential resource for grazing, hay and/or grain based on seasonal conditions, while in some cases utilising the benefits of a break crop within the cropping rotation.

To recommend options to improve;
• soil nutrients and groundcover, and 
• reduce disease levels and chemical use.

Sheep are an integral part of low-medium rainfall mixed farming systems across southern Australia and they account for 23% of Australia’s total livestock emissions. Apart from the contribution to anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, the energy lost as methane represents a significant inefficiency in sheep production systems. Therefore, maintaining or improving the balance between forage and animal productivity, and methane emissions is likely to be a challenge under a warmer and drier climate. The aim of this trial is to evaluate pasture/forage options to fill in the late-spring, autumn and early winter feed gaps; and to measure comparative animal production, feed quality and methane emissions in response to current and improved sheep feeding strategies.
