NGN Seasonal Management of Disease Complexes in a Variable Climate for the Southern VIC Mallee

This project aims to demonstrate a range of management strategies for disease complexes as they arise, including plot trials at two locations assessing genetic plant resistance, fungicide and other management strategies in wheat, barley and lentils, and up to four responsive in paddock trials across the subregions, if and where need arises. Trials are aimed to support facilitated discussion and peer to peer learning around key disease management decisions.

Nutrition for Hyper Yielding Wheat

To assess the value of higher nutrition input (N, P, K & S) for wheat in the growing season.
Individual objectives specific to the trials were:
- To assess the value of additional nutrients in the growing crop (set up as small plots at the HYC Research sites).
- To assess the value of adding increased P and K when targeting higher yield potential rather than N alone.

Under the new NVT Pathology Services Agreement 2019–23, the total number of diseases and crop species being screened in NSW has increased. Eight different crop types, both cereal and broadleaf, are annually screened for a total of 17 different diseases across three climatically and agronomically diverse sites within NSW (NSW DPI research stations based at Grafton, Tamworth and Wagga Wagga).

Non-wetting management options for growers in the Albany port zone.

The trial aims to explore management options for non-wetting soils in the Albany port zone.

Conventional methods of managing non-wetting soils involve mechanical disturbance to mix non-wetting particles with wettable particles. This trial explores the best options for placement of wetters, and wetter types for managing non-wetting soils.

Eleven treatments of differing placements and rates, as well as three seed placements were explored and analysed in this trial.

Two market available wetting agents were tested in this trial, SECOA’s SE14 and BASF Devine.

Novel management strategies to reset barley development

Are we better to increase seeding rate and reset phenology in faster spring Barley sown early to capitalize on root growth, greater carbohydrate reserve, and initiate more tillers rather than utilise current winter germplasm options sown early in the HRZ? Is spring barley more sensitive to changes in plant density than winter barley?
