Conmurra SA trials

The aim of the trial was to evaluate wheat production with the use of either granular fertiliser or liquid fertiliser inputs at seeding on three different soil types.

To answer relevant questions aimed at improving break crop performance in integrated faming systems in the HRZ.

To answer three key questions:

1. Can a break crop be as profitable as a cereal?
2. Are crop sequences including break crops more profitable than continuous wheat?
3. What effects do break crops have on soil nitrogen availability?

To examine managing bean crop canopies to optimise yield potential

To increase their knowledge on the management and performance of high yield potential wheat and barley varieties for the high rainfall zone (HRZ).

This project is primarily about understanding more about the size of the water bucket (Plant Available Water as a crop input),
and how that may impact our management decisions and the final result of our crops for the season.

In 2016 SARDI funded a barley nitrogen trial at Conmurra to value add to the MFMG field day. The trial evaluated a malting barley
(Bass) and a feed barley (Compass) and three different nitrogen regimes.

In 2016 SARDI funded a wheat nitrogen trial at Conmurra to value add to the MFMG field day. The trial evaluated nine different
nitrogen rates and application timings.

To explore the field performance of foliar fungicides for control of STB.

The trials were designed to showcase a range of pulse varieties and initiate discussions within the MFMG about pulses.

To provide growers the opportunity to further increase their understanding around the relationship between crop phenological traits and TOS.

To see if slow developing cultivars sown early can yield more than faster maturing cultivars sown later in a high rainfall environment.

The trial was established to assess the suitability of cultivars to early sowing.

These trials evaluated two management options compared to a control treatment (Table 1) across four wheat varieties, Manning (resistant to BYDV), Cobra, Revenue (susceptible to BYDV) and Brennan (highly susceptible to BYDV).

To assess the range of wheat varieties at several sites across the South East.

To assess the yield of the plant growth regulator (PGR), Moddus Evo and foliar fungicides Amistar Xtra, Cogito and experimental in furrow fungicide SYNSIF1 when used in barley. Previous work has shown that when combining PGRs with good quality fungicides yield and return on investment can be significantly enhanced in cereal crops grown in high rainfall environments. The aim of this trial was to explore these affects in more detail.

To compare barley yield and quality with no fungicide application (Treatment 1) to barley yield and quality with fungicide application (Treatment 2) (Table 1). Treatment 2, fungicide application, mimics standard practice in the South East.

The trial aims to explore the role that pastures can play in the crop rotation across the South-East region. It aims to quantify the role that pastures can play in providing nitrogen to the cropping system, and also its potential role in managing weed issues in the high rainfall regions compared to a conventional cropping system.

To evaluate the effect of existing and new chemistry on yield in broad beans

These trials are carried out each year to assess the range of wheat varieties at several sites across the South-East.

To assess the crop enhancement effects of Moddus Evo and Amistar Xtra when used in combination. Whilst Moddus Evo is a PGR that is pending registration for anti-lodging and Amistar Xtra is a superior fungicide both these products have been shown to individually contribute to yield increases beyond anti lodging and disease control respectively. In addition trial work has previously shown the combination of these two products to be synergistic with respect to the crop enhancement affect. The aim of this trial was to explore these affects in more detail.

To report on a bean variety trial.

This trial was initiated at the request of growers, to screen alternative post-emergent herbicides that may be effective in controlling weeds in this crop in the future.

To report on a canola variety trial.

This project is being carried out in the Upper South-East region to assess various Decision Support Tools and the role that they can play in improving the uptake of conservation tillage, and more efficient nitrogen management. It aims to look at 2 different “Decision Support Tools”; Yield Prophet – a computer model, and Soil Moisture probes to assess their role in conservation agriculture, and to
better understand what is happening under the soil in minimum till systems.

This trial was used to determine the efficacy and yield response of JumpStart as a seed coat on spring sown barley and to measure any residual plant available phosphorus for the following crop.
