All the lupin varieties tolerated the registered pre and post-emergent herbicides at the label rates and timings with good safety margin.

A new herbicide Ultro® 900 WG at 2.3 kg/ha applied before seeding was tolerated by all the lupin varieties.

For blue lupin control/suppression, Garlon® 600 (triclopyr) at 30 mL/ha applied at 8-leaf stage of narrow leafed lupins was tolerated well by all the varieties, whereas its application at pod setting on main stem of narrow leafed lupins caused statistically significant yield loss across all the lupin varieties (18-24%). Triclopyr use on narrow leafed lupins is not registered.

Note: Always follow label recommendations. The Department Primary Industries and Regional Development, does not endorse the use of herbicides above the registered rate or off-label use of herbicides or off-label tank mixes. Crop tolerance and yield responses to herbicides are strongly influenced by seasonal conditions.

In this trial Simazine, Diuron and Brodal were quite safe when used post sowing preemergent. However, Brodal has been known to cause crop damage when used at this stage. There are no safe early post emergent herbicides available in vetch for the control of broadleaf weeds. It appears that Morava is less tolerant of pre-emergent and in-crop herbicides compared to Blanchefleur or Languedoc.

• None of the Imi treatments resulted in a significant grain yield loss for the tolerant varieties, and few visual symptoms of crop damage were observed.

• None of the Imi treatments resulted in a significant grain yield loss for the tolerant varieties, and few visual symptoms of crop damage were observed.

• The early season climatic events of waterlogging (Wanilla) and hail damage (Tooligie) were not
  conducive for small scale field trial studies, but reflected wide scale industry issues from these
  regions.
• Although this meant that some measurements could not be taken, reasonable results were
  still gained from these trials.

The best overall herbicide options for controlling the most common broadleaf weeds in the southern Mallee are Simazine alone or Simazine plus Diuron, applied post sowing pre-emergent.

• A newly released herbicide tolerant faba bean provides increased weed management options.
• A new release lentil provides another herbicide tolerant lentil variety with different agronomic characteristics.
• However, care still needs to be taken in relation to herbicide use, paddock selection, and herbicide permits and registrations.
   

Rainbow vs Karoo canola - Karoo canola is tolerant to the triazines Simazine and Atrizine; however, it also appears that Karoo has a higher degree of tolerance to Lexone.

• In-crop applications of some broadleaf and grass herbicides can reduce nodulation and nitrogen fixation of peas.
• Timing of herbicide application and seasonal conditions play an important role in herbicide-legume interactions. 
• Late applications of some broadleaf and grass herbicides can reduce crop yields.

• Infrequent rainfall events, poor weed germination early and dry conditions at seeding resulted in challenging conditions for early weed control and crop establishment in 2018.
• In a high Barley grass weed situation herbicide mixes containing Sakura provided good weed control.
• Trifluralin (1.5 L/ha) IBS followed by Lexone (metribuzin) (180 g) post emergent caused significant crop damage due to rainfall events following the metribuzin application.
• Use as many options as possible to lower grass weed seed banks including two-year breaks.
• Regularly test grass populations for herbicide resistance.
• Aim to prevent 100% of seed from setting in all phases of the rotation.

• All herbicides provided effective control of brome grass and barley grass in wheat this season.
• Crop safety in wheat was achieved by all herbicide mixes in 2008.

• More salts in the high input soil which can be detrimental to some plants. 
•  Significantly higher residual phosphorus and potassium in the high input soil, along with higher levels of sulphur. 
•  A soil structural problem in both soil types indicating a need for gypsum and possibly lime. • A crop could be grown in the high input soil with minimal fertiliser input in 1999, whereas significant fertiliser input would be required for the district practice treatment. 

• National GRDC funded project ‘Optimising the yield and economic potential of high input cropping systems in the high rainfall zone’.
• Two nutrient omission trials sown in 2016 at Bool Lagoon to test canola and wheat yield response and the interactions between nutrients where N, P, K and S and micro-nutrients Zn and Cu are omitted.
• Relative to the treatment supplied with non-limiting nutrients, both canola and wheat grain yields were significantly lower if either P or S were not applied at sowing (38 and 30 % depression respectively for canola, 24% and 17% for wheat).
• Relative to the treatment supplied with non-limiting nutrients, canola biomass at flowering was 36 % lower without in-crop N and 8% lower without P at sowing, while wheat biomass at flowering was 40% lower without in-crop N and 12% lower without P at sowing.

• There appears to be an important interaction between time of sowing and raised beds. Hence recommendations developed from time of sowing experiments conducted on the flat may not be transferable to crops sown on raised beds.
• Yields did not appear to be greatly influenced by sowing rate.
• The impacts of row spacing on final yields are inconsistent. 

• Faba bean sown in 2019 significantly reduced Pratylenchus neglectus (root lesion nematode) numbers. Lentil and canola also reduced P. neglectus but to a lesser extent. This carried through to 2020 sown wheat where populations remained low.
• In 2019, faba bean was the lowest risk non-cereal option in the break crop phase to manage a late start or dry finish, although wheat outperformed all crop types in terms of yield and gross margin in 2019.
• Wheat sown in 2020 yielded more when sown after pulses (faba bean, lentil, chickpea) compared to when sown after canola or wheat,
• In a poor season or low rainfall situation the low nitrogen strategy (30N basal) offered the best returns, there was no yield response to higher rates of nitrogen applied in-season.
• Wheat after pulses had the greatest yield response to applied nitrogen.
• Protein response to nitrogen rate was higher in wheat-wheat compared to when sown after break crops.

• Wyalkatchem wheat reinforces its position in the cropping rotation.
• Magenta may be a possible alternative to Wyalkatchem.
• Advisable not to grow durum on the lateritic ironstone soils on the plateau.
• More research required into suitability of soft wheat varieties .
• Linseed tolerates and yields in wet soils, but its marketing requires further investigation.
• Avoid growing chickpeas unless you can eliminate wildlife.
• Lentils require good inoculation and well-drained soil. Target early or medium maturity varieties.

Chara sown 13th June gave a small but significant responses to applied nitrogen, despite a soil N reserve of 176 kg/ha N (0‐90cm) pre planting. With this later sown trial there was no significant difference in nitrogen timing, though there was a trend for seedbed/GS31 (50/50 split of N) treated crops to be slightly higher yielding than GS31/37 (50/50 split of N) treated crops.

• Deep ripping was very worth while at this site but had not effet of lowering crop requirements for N in this situation.
• Nitrogen requirements may have been lower after deep ripping if there had been more organic N to mineralise (say after a lupin crop) and/or the soil had higher mineralised N levels that were subjected to more leaching pressure.
• After deep ripping, high N inputs may be more effective delyaed until late tillering. 

• Glasshouse experiments measured plant DM response and recovery of Zn fertilisers in oxide and sulfate form using three placement treatments - banded, mixed throughout the soil volume, and applied to the soil surface.
•  Also plant recovery of Zn from pure Zn phosphates and carbonates, which are likely reaction products of banded Zn fertilisers in soil, was measured. Recovery of Zn from Zn phosphates, carbonates and oxides was lower than that of Zn sulfates when banded.
• Placement was the major factor controlling plant responsiveness to Zn.
• Zinc oxide fertilisers had very low water solubility and slow dissolution rates in water, which is related to the high pH when the oxide is dissolved in water.
• There was significantly less recovery of fertiliser Zn by plants from Zn oxides than from Zn sulfates when the fertiliser was banded near the seed, likely due to higher pH in the band as the oxide dissolved.
• However, the Zn supply to plants was the same for both sources of Zn when fertilisers were mixed through the soil, as the soil likely buffered any dissolution-induced pH increases.
• This means that Zn oxides, despite their low water solubility, can be effective fertilisers if uniformly mixed throughout the crop rooting depth but Zn sulfate is preferable for banding or surface application.

• Wheat grain yield in 2007 was increased by 0.2t/ha after the addition of 5.0t/ha of wheat straw
• Straw is important for decreasing evaporation and conserving moisture in topsoil, particularly after canopy closure and when the crop is senescing
• The additional moisture available under straw significantly increased dry matter production after GS65.
• Inter-row sowing reduces straw burial

There is some excellent material coming through the programme, with significantly higher yields than the existing check varieties. At this stage grain quality tests have not been done.

Experiments were conducted in a commercial lentil crop (2006) in a paddock considered representative of the southern Mallee region of Victoria (McCellands Jil Jil East). The study identified that seasonal variations in the spatial pattern for grain yield were explained principally by differences in the ‘effective plant available water’ (ePAW) rather than differences in nitrogen supply. ePAW was considered to be related to both the textural properties of the surface soil (eg. small rainfall events at the season break are more effective in coarser textured soils than in clay soils) and the presence of physio-chemical in the subsoil, which can limit crop access to stored water.

• Nodulation and shoot dry matter in medics is depressed by poor phosphorus (P) nutrition and in-crop application of certain herbicides.
• Applying P when establishing a medic pasture boosts shoot and root dry matter and improves root health.
• The timing of application of certain herbicides can have an important effect on maximum shoot dry matter.
• High soil nitrogen levels can reduce nodulation in medic pastures.

• Applying phosphorus to a soil with low P reserves when establishing a medic pasture boosts shoot and root dry matter, improves root health and improves N fixation.
• The addition of urea at seeding can reduce nodulation in medic pastures.
• Residues of the herbicide Logran can severely stunt medic growth.
• Applying a full label rate of Agritone 750 (late) decreases pasture production and N fixation in actively growing pastures.
• Any management practice that reduces medic biomass will reduce N fixation, such as the late application of certain herbicides, eg Agritone 750.
• In a dry growing season when medic plants are already moisture stressed, herbicides will have little impact on medic production and N fixation.
• Regardless of seasonal conditions, the management of newly established medic pastures with regard to herbicides and nutrition, appears to have no impact on the yield and protein levels of the wheat crop in the following year.

• Yield of PBA Ace and PBA Jumbo2 (the only two imidazilinone or IMI-sensitive varieties evaluated) was reduced by 70%–80% from applying imazethapyr.
• PBA Hurricane XT and PBA Herald XT are the only current commercial IMI-tolerant varieties. PBA Hurricane XT is better adapted, producing more dry matter and grain yield than PBA Herald XT in southern NSW.
• CIPAL1422 is a promising advanced Coordinated Improvement Program for Australian Lentils (CIPAL) breeding line with high grain yield. It is very IMI-tolerant, and tall and bulky with late maturity.
• Advanced breeding lines are equal to, or better than, PBA Ace and PBA Jumbo2 in southern NSW. They bring additional features such as herbicide tolerance, extra bulk and height, and a wider range of maturity.
• IMI herbicide tolerance will expand weed-control options in lentil, which is a poorly competitive crop with a limited number of registered herbicides.
• These new varieties, coupled with new technologies, demonstrate considerable potential for expanding lentils across the better class of acidic, red-brown soils of southern NSW

• The trial was sown into dry soil on the 11th May. This trial was indicative of many lupin crops within the West Midlands region in 2010, with establishment and weed control issues. Establishment was inconsistent across the trial site with seasonal conditions, non-wetting soil and rhizoctonia root rot contributing to uneven plant numbers and poor growth within some plots. Herbicide management of weeds, particularly ryegrass, was less effective than expected, resulting in high weed burdens, especially in plots with poor lupin establishment.
• Anthracnose was introduced into plots 4 weeks after sowing but warm dry weather following introduction of infection and long dry spells during the growing season reduced disease development.
• Disease assessments at crop maturity indicated that despite high levels of inoculum being introduced only low levels of disease were present within the trial and differences between varieties were not statistically significant. Approximately 10% of the moderately susceptible Jenabillup plants suffered stem infection, the resistant variety Tanjil and resistant breeding lines had between 2-4% of plants with stem infection. Pod infection levels were low across the trial due to dry weather during podding.
• Due to uneven establishment, variable soil moisture, root disease and weed burden, individual plot yields varied from 0.5 t/ha to 2 t/ha across the site (average 1.4 t/ha), however neither variety nor anthracnose infection significantly affected yield.
• In seasons with good rainfall, anthracnose can be a yield constraint for lupin production in the high-medium rainfall regions of the northern agricultural region (particularly in areas with abundant blue lupins); the anthracnose resistance in current advanced breeding lines will reduce disease development and yield loss.

1. Barley and wheat crops led to increases in P. neglectus, while mungbeans, wheat and chickpea led to increases in P. thornei.
2. The non-host summer crops (cotton, maize, mungbean and sorghum) provided the greatest reduction in crown rot inoculum while most non-host winter crops had virtually no impact.
3. There was little impact from most species on common root rot levels with wheat the worst crop option, while common root rot declined under the moderately resistant barley variety CompassP.

1. Grain legumes (chickpea, faba bean, field pea, mungbean) often leave more residual soil water at harvest than cereals, this difference is diminished due to lower subsequent fallow efficiencies and hence soil water is often similar at the sowing of the next crop.
2. Higher intensity systems have higher fallow efficiencies while lower intensity systems and those with more legumes have lower fallow efficiencies.

A late sown winter wheat Marombi and experimental wheat 10.10.3 were grazed at three different times and compared to the ungrazed crop. Drymatter production available for grazing up to GS 30/31 was 1.48 t/ha for Marombi and 1.89 t/ha for 10.10.3. Early grazing had minimal or no impact on grain yield. Grazing in the early to mid vegetative stage increased grain yield of 10.10.3 by 0.36 t/ha or 5 %. However there was a yield reduction (0.48 t/ha or 8%) by grazing the Marombi. Given the limited number of samples taken, the variation in yield may not be different from the no grazing treatment. The change in stubble mass was less than anticipated, with a decline of up to 13%.

• Similar to previous years and at other sites on Kangaroo Island, adding soil improvement agents to the subsoil did not produce any tangible benefits to wheat performance. However, chemical analysis of the soil to a depth of 40 cm below the surface did not reveal any major constraints to growth at this site except low fertility. This would help explain why adding lime and gypsum to the soil (either to the surface or into the subsoil) had no impact on crop productivity.
• In trials with deep placed nutrients in other environments, spectacular yield benefits have been measured in sandy profiles with all their fertility concentrated close to the surface and top soil drying being a frequent  occurrence during spring. Although fertility decreased at the site tested here, there was still reasonable fertility in the 10-20 cm layer and rarely did the top soil get a chance to dry in spring last year. Perhaps both of these features decreased the value of nutrients placed deep into the profile.
• Some treatments will be re-applied in 2006 in this trial so we will be able to test whether they will have an impact in a different season, and if so, how fresh applications compare to those applied in the previous year.

• Similar to previous years and at other sites on similar KI soils, adding soil improvement agents to the subsoil did
• not produce any tangible benefits to wheat performance in last year’s trial.
• However, chemical analysis of the soil to a depth of 60 cm below the surface did not reveal any major constraints to growth at this site except low fertility.
• This would help explain why adding lime and gypsum to the soil (either to the surface or into the subsoil) had no
• impact on crop productivity.
• Deep ripping did not produce any benefits to crop performance in the very dry year of 2006.

• In the first two seasons, 2009 and 2010, there was a strong and consistent yield increase in response to mouldboard ploughing. 
• In 2011 the mouldboard plough plots on average yielded 300 kg/ha (13%) less than the unploughed plots.
• This trial is an unreplicated demonstration so it’s hard to tell if the negative response is real or not. 
• For further results please see attached trial report.

• There was a 0.17 t/ha yield advantage in the 2014 season due to removing or cultivating the previous season’s stubble, possibly due to extra nitrogen being available to the crop during the growing season.
• There was a 0.08 t/ha yield advantage at MAC this season by inter row cropping rather than placing the seed on row.
• There were no differences in either barley or ryegrass numbers at the start of the cropping season or in crop.

• There were no differences in wheat yield at Minnipa in response to stubble architecture, seeding position and nitrogen treatments in 2015.
• In 2015 plant establishment was reduced with cultivation and the addition of nitrogen at seeding compared to standing stubble cut low at harvest. The extra nitrogen applied at seeding also reduced the early dry matter.
• Removing and cutting stubble low decreased the Yellow Leaf Spot disease incidence and snail numbers compared to high cut stubble.
• Stubble management and seeding position had little effect on grass weed numbers.
• Overall at Minnipa, stubble management and seeding position have not impacted highly on crop production, weeds, disease and pests over two years with relatively high stubble loads in low rainfall farming systems.

• Barley sown into standing stubble yielded higher (between 0.15-0.33 t/ha) than cultivated or removed stubble in 2016.
• Standing stubble cut low (15-17 cm) resulted in the highest level of stubble being maintained into the following season.
• Maintaining standing stubbles may be the best option for yield and stubble carry over, but adequate nitrogen must be maintained.
• In 2014 and 2015 stubble management and seeding position did not impact strongly on weeds, disease or pests with relatively high stubble loads in a low rainfall farming system at Minnipa.

Standing stubble cut low (15-17 cm) resulted in the highest level of stubble being maintained into the following season.

Stubble management and seeding position had little effect on grass weeds.

Snail numbers were higher in standing stubble cut high (30 cm) and stubble removed had the lowest numbers.

Stubbles can be estimated using 1.3-2.8 times the grain yield, but it may underestimate the stubble in an average season following a good year, or after a very poor season.

In many low rainfall farming systems livestock are still a very important part of the farming system and the level of stubble carryover is reduced after grazing.

Stubble management and seeding position have not impacted greatly on crop production, weeds, disease and pests over three years with relatively high stubble loads for low rainfall farming systems.

Grower adoption of rotary spading and mouldboard ploughing in the West Midlands has been steadily increasing.

• This trial demonstrates the productivity and financial benefits that can arise from implementing rotary spading and indicates that the practice of deep ripping prior to spading appears to be worthwhile as not only does it remove obstacles and make spading easier it also appears to be a benefit to crop growth and productivity particularly in times of drought.
• Soil compaction was a significant constraint on this site and deep ripping alone has shown an advantage. Ideally controlled traffic system should be implemented after deep tillage to prevent re-compaction and loss of these benefits.

Adequate crop nutrition following summer crop is essential for optimised winter grain yield. Soils moisture was not limiting this season, therefore wheat responses were driven by crop nutrition.

Early termination of vetch resulted in higher soil N and soil water at sowing the following year compared with later termination timings of vetch. Wheat yield in the year following vetch was highest for the earlier termination timings of the vetch. Brown manure vetch had higher soil N and soil water compared to vetch taken through to harvest.

• Winter cereal crop and variety choice can have a large impact on Pratylenchus thornei (Pt) population build-up within paddocks.
• Averaged across winter cereal entries, final Pt densities were 83% higher when sown in early May compared with early June.
• Final Pt populations were between 1.6 and 4.7 times higher in 14 of the 24 barley entries, the durum line 190873, and 12 of the 19 bread wheat entries when sown in early May compared with early June.
• The additional population build-up with early May sowing generally increased the risk level for yield loss in the following wheat crop from either low to medium, or medium to high compared to sowing in early June.
• Although earlier sowing can reduce yield loss associated with both crown rot (CR) and Pt, it does, however, appear to favour higher Pt population development in some winter cereal varieties, which could exacerbate negative consequences on following crops and/or varieties in the rotation.

• Concentrated chaff distribution had no significant impacts on nutrient stratification either horizontally or vertically across the landscape at three sites.
• Chicken litter applications appear to complement traditional chemical fertiliser applications by increasing P availability.
• All nutrients assessed were well above established critical levels and there was a tendency for all nutrients to be concentrated at the surface (0-5 cm) regardless of the known differences in mobility between N, P, K and S.

• In general for the bulk of the paddock in the wetter 2011 season there was little obvious difference in establishment between the knife point and winged point with paired rows seeder. However there were a several water repellent patches where establishment was poor for the knife point seeder but was much improved for the winged point-paired row seeder.
• Plant counts in these areas revealed that establishment was more than doubled from <100 plants/m2 to >200 plants/m2 through use of the winged point-paired row system in both the sandy gravel and pale deep sand soil types
• The advantage of improved furrow sowing as a tool to manage water repellent soils is it can be applied over all the repellent cropping areas, potentially for relatively low cost if only points and press wheels need changing on an existing seeder.

• Knowing how much water is available at any point in time, and where the crop is using water from is extremely valuable when making management decisions.
• Potential water extraction depends not only crop type but also crop growth during the season.
• Correct data interpretation is critical for success when using soil moisture data.
   

• Modern wheat varieties have a higher demand for nitrogen and agronomic practices need to take this into account.
• The most critical period for setting grain yield potential is between stem elongation (GS31) and flowering.
• Current varieties are well beyond the potential 20kg grain/ha per mm water benchmark. This needs to be updated to 24kg grain/ha per mm water.

• Fathom barley was more competitive than Hindmarsh barley, bread wheat and durum.
• Increasing seeding rate and seed bed utilisation improved crop weed competition (by up to 60%) without a yield penalty or quality downgrading.
• Tjilkuri and Mace sown at 300 seeds/m2 with a spreader boot achieved similar ARG suppression as Fathom barley sown at 150 seeds/m2 .
• Pre-emergent herbicide application offered the best control of ARG in this trial across all varieties and agronomic management factors. 
• Non chemical strategies can significantly enhance crop’s competitive ability with weeds and should be integrated with herbicide use.

• The impact of 13 different soil wetter treatments ranged from none to more than a doubling of wheat establishment.
• Grain yield benefits ranged from zero to 21% (or 0.22 t/ha).
• While higher grain yield generally correlated with better crop establishment, some treatments with low crop establishment were able to generate substantial yield responses, suggesting specific chemistries may promote later season effects.
• Combinations of some soil wetters interacted positively to maximize grain yield response.

Yield variability across the 22 focus paddocks in the project was moderate to very high. Yield variation needs to be managed to minimise the significant economic losses experienced in low performing parts of a paddock. We found very good correlations between soil EM38 maps, satellite imagery of crop vigour and crop yield at harvest. Utilising our knowledge of how the crops grew this season together with the precision farming tools available we will develop management plans in each of the focus paddocks to improve water use, yield and economic return.

• EM38 surveys need to be calibrated through soil testing to identify areas with subsoil constraints.
• Simulated wheat yields using historical rainfall data demonstrated the effects of soil type and subsoil limitations on potential crop yields and recharge.
• Variable rate technology for fertiliser could optimise returns for paddocks with subsoil limitations.

• Essential plant growth requirements including nutrients and water are influenced by the capacity of the soil to both store and supply these elements.
• Infiltration of water into soil and the ability for soils to retain water are processes fundamentally important for soil productivity.
• Management strategies that increase the rate of water infiltration into soils are likely to improve the potential of the soil to capture larger amounts of water.
• The rate of movement through the soil profile however, may be more important for crop production in terms of influencing the ability of plants to utilise this water.
•  

While water volume and droplet size were the focus of this study there are further measures that can be taken by the spray operator to increase herbicide penetration in stubble. In a recent paper by Gordon (2017) some of the strategies highlighted were:

• Reducing spraying travel speeds can generally improve the penetration into stubble and improve the evenness of the application.
• Narrower nozzle spacings can also be of benefit, provided the spray quality and boom height are suitable. 
• Alternately, many operators have plumbed machines with nozzle spacings to match the crop row width. Where nozzles are positioned in the centre of the inter-row gap between standing stubble lines, the nozzle height may be lowered to obtain an overlap close to the base of the stubble. This may improve soil contact and reduce interception by the stubble, provided spraying speeds and wind speeds do not excessive.

• Varieties in this trial did not show a response to extra applied nitrogen at this site which was in pasture for the previous 3 years. Possible reasons are low rainfall and plants being water limited and/or sufficient background levels of nitrogen available for the crop in this soil type. 
• In this season results showed a benefit in seeding early, providing greater growing season and therefore yield benefit, averaging 210 kg/ha higher.

• With the current climate trending to decreased seasonal rainfall, each 1% increase in productivity is important.
• Increases in productivity can come from increased yield, more efficient application of inputs, or more timely grain marketing.
• Knowledge on the soil water holding properties, the time when the crop is taking up the most water from the soil and the current yield estimation models allows growers to market grain with more confidence pre harvest.
• Tools such as Yield Prophet, iPaddock Yield, soil moisture Probes and water use efficiency models are all very useful in assisting to predict grain yields with a relatively high level of confidence when accurately set up.
• In this project “iPaddock Yield” provided the greatest level of accuracy in predicting final grain yield on July 31st 2015. The simple French & Shultz “Broken Stick” model was very close to the accuracy of the ipaddock Yield at 77% & 74% accuracy.
• When there is confidence in the early to mid-season yield prediction combined with accurate soil Nitrogen testing and modeling, there is a greater chance of maximizing profits from applied nitrogen.

• At three out of the 4 sites gladius wheat sown onto a pea crop background from 2011 produced the best grain yields.
• At Condowie wheat on barley (2.54t/ha average) was always better than wheat on wheat (2.10t/ha average), regardless of extra nitrogen.

• The addition of a straw layer acted to reduce evaporation and significantly increased grain yields and water use efficiency in 2012, at 4 field sites.
• Soil evaporation also decreased with increasing light interception from larger crop canopies.

A trial was established west of Moora in 2016 to investigate in season potassium response in barley. The main objective was to compare Lokomotive, a liquid potassium product, to the more commonly used granular muriate of potash (MoP).  Both soil and plant sample analysis showed the site to be marginal/deficient in potassium. Treatments were applied at GS 32. This timing was chosen as potassium deficiency is most commonly identified late in the growing season, when visual symptoms appear, and confidence in an economic response to applications of MoP in the current season is diminishing. At the time of application there were typical potassium leaf deficiency symptoms on the lower leaves. 

Good growing conditions were experienced in Moora in 2016 and resulted in high barley yields of 4.17 to 4.39 t/ha. There was a small yield response (1.7% to 5.3%) from both Lokomotive and MoP however this was not significantly different to the untreated control. The small response to potassium in 2016 may be attributed to the wet spring conditions that would have made potassium in the soil more available to the crop. Further evaluation of in season potassium application is required when spring conditions aren’t as favorable as 2016.  

 

 

• As a result of very poor seasonal conditions, there was no response to nitrogen applied to Yitpi wheat at either Rupanyup or Hopetoun in 2006, despite very low soil nitrogen levels.
• Delaying nitrogen application until after the end of tillering can allow a more accurate assessment of seasonal conditions to be made and money to be spent on nitrogen only if a response is likely.

Climate variability or climate change? Whatever the situation we face we need to be prepared to respond quickly to temperature and rainfall extremes with better in-crop management decisions.

Climate variability is something we have to learn to live with, and we need to manage it better. Be prepared to learn more about the impact of increasing variability in temperature and rainfall on the bottom line of your farm.

• There was very little disease pressure at this particular demonstraiton site.
• This trial should be repeated under a number of different conditions with varying disease pressure to get a better understanding of the true value of fungicides in low rainfall areas.

• Yield differences between soil types were less than seen in previous seasons on this paddock, although they did yield in expected order.
• Starting nitrogen levels were quite high (>100kg N/ha) due to previous crop history.
• Overall with the better responses to applied N being achieved on the better soils or where there was plenty of starting soil nitrogen, this experiment has given encouragement to the idea of managing soil types (or management zones) differentially for N.

Prior to seeding the trial in 2015, the site was extensively soil sampled to a 60 cm depth by Precision SoilTech.  An area with the capacity to accommodate the treatments with minimal variation in soil pH between plots was identified, however due to the nature of this site and the layout of the treatments (designed to be practical for the landowner to implement and maintain), there are inconsistencies within the trial which need to be carefully considered when assessing treatment effects. There were no systematic differences between the lime treatments in crop establishment and harvest yield, seemingly as a result of variability in soil pH and other characteristics between plots, complicated further by the layout of the trial, rather than a treatment effect.

It was observed that incorporation by both offset discs and one way plough did not reduced or cause uneven germination compared to knife-point at seeding, and during the season it was not visually evident that incorporation treatments had a major effect on crop growth and health compared to the control treatment.

While it may not be expected that shallow incorporation of lime would result in significant differences between lime treatments on a forest gravel soil type in the first year of a trial, it is imperative going forward into the next two seasons that a professional statistician helps analyse current and future data to ensure that subsequent interpretations can be improved, given the apparent impacts of site variability, and as treatment effects may become more pronounced.  It is expected that the ongoing plot soil testing conducted prior seeding each season will be the primary indicator used to determine whether incorporation of lime using either offset discs or one way plough can reduce soil acidity on a forest gravel at depth more quickly than the district practice of top-dressing, while yield responses will determine any economic benefits.

EverCrop research reported in this and previous Crop Updates (2010-2014) has built up a sound knowledge base on the viability, performance and economics of pasture cropping and companion annual legume based systems for fragile soils in the Northern Agricultural Region that are marginal for continuous cropping. Collectively, trials at Mingenew and Dandaragan over the past two seasons (2013 & 2014) have demonstrated that subtropical perennial grass pastures lift the overall productivity of deep sandy soils, extend the period of available green feed, convert summer rainfall into feed, reduce the winter and summer weed burden, and increase ground cover.

• The trial was confounded by a severe shortage of plant available water (e.g. very low rainfall) and severe sub-soil acidity that resulted in toxic levels of plant aluminum concentrations that impacted negatively on crop productivity.
• The treatments (excluding prilled humate, which produced negative crop impacts) should be repeated (with VAM) at a site with more even sub-soil conditions. CALCIPRILL and VAM seed dressing showed particular potential for quality grain production and MAGPRILL showed particular potential as an effect agent for increasing soil pH.

• No yield differences were observed between the incorporated stubble and the standing stubble plots despite differences being recorded in plant growth during the year.
• The dry spring conditions had an impact on grain yields with no significant difference observed between treatments. 

• The rotation with canola as a single break crop (canola– wheat–wheat rotation) had the highest average gross margin ($529/year) across three years.
• The profit/cost ratio was the highest when canola was used as a single break crop (2:8) and the lowest for all brown manure treatments as well as continuous cereal without nitrogen input.

• Compass, Fathom and Scope CL were good competitors with weeds, which is consistent with previous years’ findings.
• Hindmarsh and Spartacus CL are poor weed competitors.
• The advantage of sowing earlier in order to increase crop competition failed to improve the competitiveness of La Trobe given the high spring rainfall.

• Managed bee hives have the ability to substantially increase bean crop yields.
• Across the 12 bean trials there was an average of 54% yield increase over the exclusion tent.
• In trials with adequate introduced bee densities an average of 73% yield increase was achieved over the exclusion tent.

Stripe rust indicator plots were sown at three BCG trial sites - Sea Lake, Birchip and Marnoo. Seven varieties with different disease resistance levels, ranging from Very Susceptible (VS) to Resistant (R), were sown. These plots served as an excellent tool to observe when stripe rust establishes in an area, what impact a single application of fungicide had on the disease level and also, very importantly, whether the established rust resistance ratings were holding true for each of the varieties. T

 Indigo 76 microbial seed treatment was applied @ 3mL/1000kg seed one day prior to planting. There was no significant impact on establishment, NDVI (~crop biomass) or grain yield across the four crop types evaluated. There was however a significant reduction in grain screenings in Indigo treated plots with a reduction in average screenings from 5.6% to 4.9%.The level of impact did not made any difference in the receival grade for any crop. There was no significant difference in barley retention but a clear trend to increased retention when Indigo was applied. Retention increased from 59 to 62%. No change in grain quality was obtained in this situation. In this trial, the application of Indigo 76 microbial seed treatment did not achieve a significant impact on yield or quality grade when applied to wheat, barley, durum or chickpea seed.

• The Kerang site had a Potassium (K) soil level (0-10cm) that exceeded 600 ppm (Colwell K) at sowing and showed no yield response to additional K applied in crop.
• As was the case at Yenda the application of K as potassium sulphate at V4 or V8 saw no change in leaf tissue levels when compared to the control (no added K) assessed at V10 or tasselling.
• Harvest results showed no response to added potassium, indicating that the soil was able to supply the required potassium to the crop.
• There was no evidence of luxury uptake of K in tissue and grain samples (assessed in untreated, 40 (tissue only) and 80 kg /ha K).

• The Yenda site had a Potassium (K) soil level (0-10cm) that exceeded 500 ppm (Colwell K) at sowing and showed no yield response to additional K applied post sowing in crop.
• Application of K as potassium sulphate at V4 and or V8 saw no change in leaf tissue levels when compared to the control (no added K) when tissues were assessed at V8 or tasselling.
• Harvest results showed no response to added potassium, indicating that the soil was able to supply the required potassium to the crop.
• There was no evidence of luxury uptake of K in tissue and grain samples (assessed in untreated and 80 kg /ha K).

• Plant growth regulators (PGRs) had minimal effects on the plant height of different barley varieties.
• PGRs reduced some lodging, however, this occurred predominantly in the taller cultivar (cv) prone to lodging (cv. CompassA).
• Neither PGR nor nitrogen (N) application increased grain yield.
• PGRs should be strategically applied, taking into account the interaction between cultivar, seasonalconditions, and application timing.

• However, the influence of seedbed N application (50kg/ha N) was evident in the crop structure scores, producing 150-200 more shoots/m2 and producing higher readings when the crop sensor Greenseeker® was passed over the trial than the GS30 stem elongation timing or the zero nitrogen controls.
• Despite a relatively low soil nitrogen reserve at sowing (43 kg/ha N 0-100cm), there was no influence of nitrogen on yield.
• In a trial subject to low levels of spot form of net blotch (SFNB), there was no response to fungicide over the untreated.

• Pre-emergent herbicides can cause crop damage. Separation of the herbicide from crop seed is essential for crop safety, which is more easily achieved in knife-point & press wheel seeding systems but considerably more difficult with low soil disturbance single discs.
• Crop stubble can intercept & bind pre-emergent herbicides, which affects crop safety & herbicide efficacy. Low solubility herbicides such as trifluralin have a tendency to bind strongly to crop residues, which reduces the potential for crop damage but also limits its ability to provide effective weed control in situations with heavy stubble load.
• Choose the right herbicide for the job – not all pre-emergent herbicides behave the same so follow label recommendations closely.

• Crop yields declined by an average of 31kg/ha/day when sowing was delayed from 20 May to 2 June.
• There was not any significant interactions between varieties in their response to delayed sowing time from 20 May to 15 June.
• The varieties Bunnu, EGA Bonnie Rock, Espada, Fang, Lincoln and Yandanooka produced screenings greater than 5% when sown in mid June. 

• Crop yields declined by an average of 31 kg/ha/day when sowing was delayed from the 20th May to the 2nd June.
• Delaying seeding from 2nd June to the 15th June resulted in an average yields decline of 45 kg/ha/day.
• There were not any significant interactions between varieties in their response to delayed sowing time from 20th May to the 15th June. -
• The top performing AH/APW varieties were Carnamah, EGA Bonnie Rock, Espada, Katana, King Rock, Mace, Scout, Wyalkatchem and Zippy. Screenings of these varieties was less than 5% at each sowing time.
• The varieties Binnu, EGA Bonnie Rock, Espada, Fang, Lincoln and Yandanooka produced screenings greater than 5% when sown in mid June.
