From this trial:

• No crop response to the addition of Zinc. Soil and plant tests were in the deficient range. Zinc applied at seeding either as a granular fertiliser or as a fluid fertiliser increased leaf zinc Z14.

From the whole project:

• Current guidelines are still relevant and effective for TE management.
• Some current interpretations of soil tests are causing issues - the suggested levels to avoid deficiencies are much higher in some lab reports than is our experience from field trials. These are creating false impressions of the extent and severity of Zn and Cu deficiencies.
• No evidence of a major increase in the incidence or severity of TE deficiencies in the cropping zones.
• Fluid delivery of TEs at seeding is a valid management strategy but rates of the target TE need to be the same as used with compounded fertilisers.
• Generally, all sources of foliar TE were equally effective.

• 40 kg N/ha applied upfront was the best yielding treatment for 2015, with the best protein results where the 40 Kg of N was applied as Urea.
• We found that 20 kg N/ha applied as a Zn enriched Urea product achieved a yield close to 40 kg N/ha as straight urea and we plan to test this treatment again in 2016.
• The timing and form of S application did not have any effect in 2015. 

• The highest yield in 2016 at Loxton could be achieved with either 40 kg N/ha as urea or 20 kg N/ha as Zn-coat urea or Zn-enriched MAP.
• Compared to applying 20 kg N/ha as normal urea, using Zn-
coated urea (20 kg N/ha) or Zn-enriched MAP with urea (20 kg N /ha) increased yield by over 20%.
• This is the second consecutive season that Zn coated Urea at sowing (20kg N/ha) has significantly increase yield compared to normal Urea (20 kg N /ha).
• Applying foliar Zn has not increased yield at this site in 2015 or 2016.
• Nitrogen was a key driver of wheat productivity again, with 40 kg/ha N at sowing increasing yield by over 20% compared to 20 kg/ha N at sowing, but water use efficiency remained poor on this sandy soil.
• There was also no benefit in delaying N application at Ouyen, however very high rates (60-80 kg/N ha) using higher late application rates increased yield on the midslope.
• In 2016 there was a large difference in yield between the midslope (2.90 t/ha) and the nearby sand dune (0.86 t/ha) at Ouyen which could not be closed through the addition of N, S and Zn to the sand.

• The highest yield in 2016 at Loxton could be achieved with either 40 kg N/ha as urea or 20 kg N/ha as Zn-coat urea or Zn-enriched MAP.

• The Yield Prophet uses the APSIM model to estimate wheat yields based on seasonal growing conditions and inputs.
• The outcomes of the Yield Prophet allow farmers to make better pre-sowing and in-crop management decisions which reduce risk and optimise returns.
• The Yield Prophet reports on crop growth during the season; availability of soil water and soil N; likely responses to N fertiliser; and calculates probabilities for yield and protein.
• The Yield Prophet is a web based service and accessible to subscribers and visitors on www.yieldprophet.com.au/yieldprophet.

Cultivation and variety selection affects the performance of a crop when root lesion nematode numbers are high. Removing medic fallow by cultivation in October increased wheat yields significantly. Lower disturbance methods such as short cultivation (February) and direct drill did not yield as high.

• Maintaining ryegrass seedbanks at low levels is critical due to the weeds competitive nature and ability to rapidly evolve resistance

• Effective management strategies in a canola and wheat cropping rotation can provide long-term management of Group A resistant ryegrass

• This trial was conducted in Victoria; varieties and some technologies utilised in this trial are not registered for use in South Australia.

The results have clearly shown that effective soil residual herbicides used in combination with timely applications of POST glyphosate in RT-canola can provide acceptable control of Group A resistant ryegrass. Ability to reduce seed set and seedbank replenishment in this initial phase of 2-year break is crucial to long-term management of ryegrass, particularly given that wheat is to follow and weed
control will rely on the few effective pre-emergent herbicides available.

• This set of trials indicates that SACOA ‘Irrigator’ banded wetting agent can improve crop establishment and grain yield but that responses can be highly variable. The 27-32% yield increase seen in 3 of the trials is very encouraging. Based on these and other trials it can be suggested that banded wetting agents are most likely to be effective when:
• Soils are moderate to strongly repellent and there are few residual roots form the previous year’s crop; and points and tines are used for seeding.
• Banded wetter is applied in a consistent stream to the base of relatively stable furrows. Collapsing furrows, furrow infill and a disrupted band of wetting agent can reduce efficacy. Presswheels with a more rectangular cross section tend to rip up furrow walls and the disturbed soil buries and mixes banded wetting agent. ‘V’ section or round section presswheels with no deep flange reduce such problems.
• The banded wetting agent kit needs to be robust and reliable and needs to accurately apply the wetting agent in a continuous stream into the base of the furrow
• Crops sown early into dry or partially dry soil before opening rains derive more benefit from banded wetter. Banded wetting agents are typically less beneficial when used later in the sowing program when there has already been rain and the soil has started to wet up.
• Growers already using wetting agents are tending to modify their usage of banded wetter to better match the likelihood of significant benefits. Some growers only use banded wetter for the dry seeding or early part of the program and don’t use it later in the program after there has been more rain.  Other growers are planning to use higher rates of banded wetter early in the program but then aim to reduce the rates when sowing later in the season. Both of these strategies will reduce cost while maximising the opportunity for benefits to crop establishment and yield. Current research in the state is showing that different banded wetting agent products can have a wide range of effects of crop establishment and especially on yield. DAFWA is continuing to research a range of products to help growers evaluate which types of banded wetting agent are more suitable for their farming system.

• Significant crop biomass responses were observed on wheat, barley and canola crops at anthesis.
• The large crop biomass responses under organic amendment treatments were largely due to extra nutrients from lucerne pellets.
• The dramatic crop biomass responses observed at anthesis on canola and barley crops did not translate into grain yield under treatments with lucerne pellets applied, due to severe lodging.
• Soil chemical, physical and biological properties will be monitored to understand the soil-plant interactions, the factors driving the differences in crop response to the various treatments and the residual value of the amendments.

• Subsoil acidity is a major constraint to crop productivity in the high rainfall zone (500–800 mm) of southeastern Australia.
• More aggressive methods, such as deep ripping in conjunction with lime or other amendments, are being tested to achieve rapid changes to pH at depth.
• A long-term field experiment was established to study changes in the chemical, physical and biological properties of soil under vigorous soil amelioration techniques.

• Sowing at the earliest opportunity (which requires rainfall) is an important component of reducing the risk of canola production in low rainfall environments.
• The amount of N available to the crop is critical to productivity in a canola crop that has established well.
• Applying adequate doses of fertiliser N at seeding or early in the crop’s development have produced the highest grain yields but this was less important in a wet spring like 2016.
• Legumes can provide N to a subsequent canola crop, but in many cases, canola growing on legume residue will still respond to fertiliser N inputs.
• Analysis of the profit-risk context for optimal N inputs for canola produced in low rainfall environments is underway.

• Incorporating seed behind press wheels resulted in the best crop establishment and one of the higher yields.
• A split application of seed, some broadcast in front of the seeder and some sown through the seeding boots shows promise.
• Soil wetters were ineffective for increasing emergence or grain yield.

Increasing plant density is a tool to improve a crop’s competitiveness against weeds. This strategy did not adversely affect the yield of the varieties at the Liebe Main Trial Site in 2012. 

Nitrogen treatments did not significantly influence crop yield however, did influence grain protein. The soil nitrogen levels and season are likely to have influenced this result. Soil testing and understanding the crops requirements as the season unfolds are useful strategies to manage crop performance economically.

The environment is likely to have had the bigger influence on the performance of the varieties than plant density or nitrogen. Growing season rainfall for 2012 was lower than average and disease patches (likely Rhizoctonia) were evident at the trial. The water use efficiency at the site was 13 kg/mm given growing season rainfall (April to October) was 133mm (plus 34mm in January) and grain yields of 1.98 t/ha across whole trial.

• Cobra and Mace were significantly higher yielding than Emu Rock at all seeding densities (P<0.05). There was a yield increase for Emu Rock and Cobra when plant density increased from 83 plants/m2 to 130 plants/m². Further  increases in plant density did not improve or reduced grain yield of these varieties. There was a yield increase for Mace from 130 plants/m2 162 plants/m2. Increasing plant density did not influence grain screenings which were less than 2% for all varieties.
• At Badgingarra, nitrogen application at seeding (14, 30, 60 and 90 kg/ha) did not affect grain yield at either seeding densities (data not provided).   The soil was a red sandy loam with nitrate levels in the top 20 cm of soil at 55mg/kg.   Protein levels in the grain were in excess of 12.5% for all treatments and varieties.  The higher split nitrogen application did significantly increase protein by 0.4% however without a yield increase the late N application was not economical.   This may be a strategy to consider for high yielding varieties such as Mace.  At the higher plant density, and higher yield, Mace had lower protein than Cobra and Emu Rock.  

• Trials in the Condobolin area have shown excellent responses to topdressing in wetter years when the nitrogen requirement of the crop is higher than initially expected.

• In wheat an application rate of 20 kg N/ha in-season was sufficient to achieve the highest yield at Hart in 2017. However, it was the 80 kg/ha treatment which maximised yield and protein to achieve the best return on nitrogen fertiliser invested.
• For barley an application of 40 kg N/ha was adequate to produce the highest yield and quality within the trial.

• Cu and Zn basal in 1957

• Mo and Mn applied as cross strips in 1959

• Only a end of the experiment showed pale clover and a marked response to Mo.

• Conclusion little chance of Mo reponses ; unlikely to be extensive areas of Mo defiicency on this soil type in the district

Topdressed Mn less effective than drilled

• Chlorotic and stunted wheat was found to have higher shoot manganese content than healthy plants in the same fields • High values were sometimes associated (correlated) with soil acidity and sometimes with waterlogging.
• In experiments, direct drilling resulted in lower manganese content of wheat, while what following lupin had higher manganese than wheat following wheat.
• Application of lime (0, 2.5 and 5 t/a) to an acid soil (pH 5) reduced the manganese content of wheat from 373, to 135 and 191 ppm respectively.
• On soil from a problem paddock near Rutherglen, application of ammonium sulphate nearly doubles manganese content of Olympic but not Egret wheat, while calcium nitrate reduced manganese in both cultivars.

• Applying N at GS31 increased yield but no response to manganese was measured.

• There was a dry matter response measured at anthesis to all treatments with application of manganese but due to dry season this was not translated into yield increases.

Mace was the highest yielder with the best grain quality and being a hard variety gave the best gross margin. All other varieties didn’t make their base grade of APW2 with the exception of one Magenta treatment. Adding nitrogen had a negative impact on yields and therefore gross margins with the exception of Magenta 25N, which was able to scrape into a higher bin grade. 

• In a below average rainfall year, with a very dry finish gravelly sands were still highly responsive to applied P, with 0.6 t/ha response to 60 kg/ha P over the last two years and 30 kg/ha applied this year
• Nitrogen in the absence of phosphorus did not significantly increase yield at either site.  This highlights the requirement to get your P rates tailored to your potential at seeding time, as low P rates may limit N response in a good year.
• There was strong correlation between early vigour and grain yield at both sites, again highlighting the need to establish a strong, healthy crop with sufficient early nutrition.
• Increasing plant numbers did not result in increased grain yield on poor sands.
• This trial shows that on variable light country variable rate fertiliser applications would be a useful tool to improve nutrient use efficiency on variable sands, as both sites had significantly different yield potential and nutrient requirement.

• Early sowing (22 April) had the largest positive impact on canola yield when comparing a range of treatments trialled in 2015, similar to results observed in 2013 and 2014. Sowing on 22 April improved yields up to 12%, depending on variety, compared to 29 April sowing date.
• Different management practices are needed to establish canola on different soil types under marginal moisture conditions. On a loamy soil at Minnipa deeper sowing (to 4 cm) produced the highest yields, whereas shallower sowing (1 cm) produced the highest yields at Piednippie, particularly with the smaller seeded variety Stingray.
• Trials at Piednippie in 2015 showed that yields up to 0.8 t/ha are achievable in a below average rainfall season, provided the crop is established early and achieves around 50 plants/m2 in open-pollinated varieties.
• Results from similar trials in 2013, 2014 and 2015 have all shown that the highest yielding canola has consistently come from plots with plant establishments of over 50 plants/m2 for open pollinated varieties and 40 plants/m2 for hybrid varieties.

• Early sowing (22 April) had the largest positive impact on canola yield when comparing a range of treatments trialled in 2015, similar to results observed in 2013 and 2014. Sowing on 22 April improved yields up to 12%, depending on variety, compared to 29 April sowing date.

• Ripping to 550mm increased yeild in the deep pale sand (Dune) and yellow loamy sand (swale).
• Topsoil slotting, with soil inclusion plates attached to the rear of deep ripper tines, can increase yeild from deep sandy soils more than by deeper ripping alone.
• Deeper ripping with topsoil slotting also helped lessen grain losses from dry and hot spring weather.
• If slotting maintains the de-compaction response longer it will provide very good returnson investment.   

• Average grain yield was higher at Hart in 2011 (2.9t/ha) compared to 2010 (2.5t/ha) and 2009 (2.4t/ha).
• Similarly to previous favourable seasons, no sowing time response was observed in 2011.
• Blackspot severity was low in 2011 because spore release was high prior to sowing and emergence.
• A 4% yield increase was achieved through fungicide applications but this was not economical in 2011.
• Recently released PBA varieties Gunyah, Twilight, Oura and Percy all performed similarly to Kaspa.
• Potential releases OZP0819 and OZP0903 both yielded 8% higher than Kaspa, while Alma was the lowest yielding variety, 7% below Kaspa.

• Grain yield of field peas sown at Hart in 2010 averaged 2.5t/ha across all varieties.
• No time of sowing response was observed in 2010.
• Early sown plots with uncontrolled blackspot showed a 35% yield loss compared to the optimum control (fortnightly chlorothalonil), which yielded 3.6t/ha.
• Prospective releases OZP0703 and OZP0903 show a lot of promise, with OZP0703 performing similarly to Kaspa and OZP0903 yielding 10% greater.
• Chlorothalonil (Bravo), pyraclostrobin (Cabrio) and azoxystrobin plus chlorothalonil (Amistar Opti) increased yields compared to the nil treatment with disease pressure.

There is a difference between maximising biomass and the optimal biomass for maximum yield in a particular environment.

Maximising biomass creates agronomic problems such as increased foliar disease and early weed competition.

Irrigation can supply moisture during grain fill but cannot control the temperature - many of the winter wheats mature too late to avoid heat stress during grain fill. 

There is a difference between maximising biomass and the optimal biomass for maximum yield in a particular environment.

Maximising biomass creates agronomic problems such as increased foliar disease and early weed competition.

Irrigation can supply moisture during grain fill but cannot control the temperature - many of the winter wheats mature too late to avoid heat stress during grain fill. 

• Significant water allocation cuts have forced irrigators to optimise production with the amount of water available.
• The project has an agronomy component and a hydrology component.
• Experiments are located in Whitton, Kerang and Finley.

In high yielding environment with yield potential around 5 t/ha, Cobra (AH) yielded similar to Mace (AH) in both May and June sowings. New variety Trojan (quality grade not yet known in WA) outyielded Mace by 8% across both time of sowings. Selecting two or three varieties with different traits should help to manage production risks and to achieve yield stability.

• Despite three years of above average rainfall, a red calcareous sandy loam at Minnipa with soil phosphorus reserves of 27 mg/kg of Colwell P has not required any added P fertiliser for maximum cereal grain yields.

• A site with high phosphorus (P) reserves needed no extra P fertiliser to maximise the yield of wheat in 2009 at MAC.

The FAST systems economic analysis has provided farmer participants with some useful guidelines to help identify their business potential.

• In year 1 of this experiment, we demonstrated that genetically diverse wheat cultivars performed differently in two locations with varying rainfall patterns. Significant differences in crop biomass, LAI, weed count and biomass between  cultivars was also location dependent. These results show that although weed suppression in wheat is influenced by genotype, the genotypic response in wheat is clearly influenced by environmental factors as well, when it comes to growth, yield and weed suppression. However, certain cultivars were excellent performers in both locations in terms of weed suppression and crop yields and these included Espada and Condo and to a lesser extent Janz. Additional results will be obtained from metabolomic analyses to evaluate both primary and secondary biosynthetic pathways operational in crop genotypes and to determine if these pathways influence weed suppression in either location over time. The role of hydroxamic acids in weed suppression will be further examined in detail through targeted metabolic profiling in both soils and plant tissue. Additional field experiments will be repeated over the next 3 years to determine impacts of year and location upon wheat cultivar performance and weed suppression.

• The trials across agro-ecological zones have highlighted differences between varieties in their ability to respond to a range of production drivers over varied environments and seasons.
• There was no varietal difference between Mace and Trojan at Minnipa with both yielding an average of 1.7 t/ha, and the ungrazed treatment yielded 0.2 t/ha higher than the grazed. There was no difference in grazing response between cultivars.
• Nitrogen (N) can provide assistance in plant recovery through higher yields and grain quality with in-season application of N after grazing.

• The trial is showing clearly that the early years of no tillage come with a significant yield penalty in most treatments.
• This is most significant when coming out of a spray fallow as seen in both the ley/fallow/wheat treatment and the wheat/fallow/wheat treatment.

• Issues such as diseases and weeds are now starting to affect the profitability of the continuous wheat system.
• Minimum tillage needs ideal conditions at sowing to be successful on these soils.
• Seasonal variation has influenced cropping system comparisons, hence the need for the trial to continue into the future.

• Long term gross margin data shows conventional tillage to be more profitable than minimum tillage.
• Long term gross margin data also shows that continuous wheat and rotation l are the most profitable rotations.
• No-tillage into a long fallow situation is significantly less profitable than conventional tillage, by $147.oo/ha. This is not the case with no tillage into a stubble situation which is not significantly different to conventional tillage.
• A major factor determining the profitability of the no tillage treatment is effective weed control.
• The threat of root diseases, such as Rhizoctonia, is now at a high risk level in the continuous wheat rotation, particularly under no tillage, whereas the risk is minimal in other rotations. 

Continuous cropping has remained the most profitable rotation since the trial began, especially continuous wheat. This system however will not last, and will be less profitable in the next few years, as suggested by the GM variations in figures 6 and 7. For continuous cropping to be sustainable, a break crop is needed to keep the system working.

• Proper rotations (irrespective of tillage methods) incorporating no more than two cereal crops in sequence with the addition of either a break crop or a fallow once in every three years is ideal. This rotation allows a very productive and sustainable farming system in our environment.
• The most profitable system since 1999 has been two years of cereal followed by a break crop such as peas under no till.
• No till systems are now becoming more profitable in the trial than cultivated systems under every rotation.
• No till will work on our problem soils so long as effective weed control is achieved.
• Under a continuous cereal rotation, the impact of weeds, diseases, poor nutrition and subsequently lower yields has lowered profitability

• No-till has performed on average 5% higher in yield and increased profits over cultivated farming systems in continuous cropping rotations.
• Adding cultivation to the system has increased both yield and profit in the 18 month fallow rotations.
• Thirteen years of continuous wheat has produced the most grain per hectare, closely followed by a wheat–barley–field pea rotation.

• No barley varietal differences in tolerance to metribuzin applied either pre-sowing or post-emergent have been detected in 3 years of trials on sandy loam soils at Walpeup and Woomelang.
• Crop damage from metribuzin has been known to occur in some commercial situations so label advice should be adhered to.

The importance of reviewing long term data was evident at Conmurra with the mid-late maturing varieties being the
highest yielding (Table 1), in contrast to 2015 results when Bass, Commander and Compass were in the top four yield performers.
The Julian Day measurement (the day of the year that 50 % of the plants are flowering) has been included for the Conmurra site, and shows that those varieties that had a longer growing season (> 280 Julian Days) were the varieties that achieved the site mean (5.96 t/ha) or greater. The new varieties from Elders; Alestar (medium-long season), Maltstar (long season) and the experimental line SMBA-4557A (medium-long season) all performed well at Conmurra.

There are no NVT Canola sites in the lower South East and MFMG growers identified that it was important to evaluate canola varieties in the high rainfall zone of the South East. 

• MFMG funded variety trials at Conmurra and Millicent on high yield potential wheat and barley lines.
• Released cultivars and experimental lines were evaluated.
• This trial provided growers the opportunity to increase their knowledge on the management and performance of high yield potential wheat and barley varieties for the high rainfall zone (HRZ).
• Trial planning for 2018 is underway focusing on elite lines.

• Trial work in other states suggests plant growth regulators (PGR’s) can manipulate plant architecture in early sown cereal crops.
• MFMG funded PGR trials at Conmurra and Millicent on wheat and barley.
• The application of PGR’s on wheat increased yield overall at Conmurra, but did not alter plant architecture, flowering or grain quality.
• This trial provided growers the opportunity to increase their knowledge on the use of PGR’s.

• A literature review of micronutrient limitations to nodulation and N2 fixation in tropical legume crops.

• During the extremely dry 2006 season the addition of micronutrients had no significant effect on crop performance and there was no benefit, in terms of grain yield, from the application of nitrogen, regardless of product.
• There is no benefit to apply micronutrients when levels are adequate at GS30 and when there is a good history of applications.

• Wheat grown on highly calcareous soils responded to zinc and manganese applications.
• Micronutrients were most effective when they were applied in fluid form which provided economical responses.
• There was no grain yield response when granular micronutrients were applied as a dry blend with granular NP fertiliser or as a coating on granules.

On heavier soil types with higher levels of organic matter, using a speed tiller to incorporate a wheat stubble may assist in increasing canola yields. If incorporation occurs immediately post-harvest, then the addition of nitrogen may not be required if the soil nitrogen levels are adequate. If incorporation is delayed and occurs immediately prior to sowing, then the addition of nitrogen should be considered.

• Yields were excellent considering the dry (T/ha)  conditions during early spring.
• No frost damage occurred and while leaf rust was present on all varieties (except Goldmark) it did not appear to affect the yield greatly. 
• Weather damage occurred due to the rain that fell in late December, with Goldmark and Rosella appearing to be the worst affected.
• To date, grain quality evaluation has not occurred. 

• Grazing did not change grain yield or quality. Rather, moisture stress was more important in a dry finish
• In a dry year, the ratio of grain yield to crop biomass at flowering is 0.40. In an average year it is around 0.55
• Grazing slows crop maturity by one to two weeks, which meant Revenue (long season variety) was still booting during the October heat wave 

• District Practice beat the farmers for grain yield and profit!
• Researchers may blitz the field yet, just watch this space…
• Oh, and by the way, the farmers are still winning, just.

• A comparison of 2001 and 2010 soil analysis suggests that organic carbon levels may have declined over the 9 year competition, irrespective of the rotation utilised and production achieved.
• However to suggest that there is a continuing long term decline in soil health in the face of improved “sustainable” farming techniques is premature.
• The competition ceased in its current form in 2010 with all paddocks sown to an oilseed (canola or juncea).

• Depending on seasonal influence, stored soil moisture, soil nutrition, stocking rate management and correct timing (early tillering at growth stage (GS) 18-22, rather than later tillering at GS 24-28), grazing can be done with no detriment to crop yield.
• However, preceding paddock history had a significant impact on subsequent crop success and needs to be considered when planning future rotations.

• The repeated Gairdner control plots showed variation across the site and therefore it is difficult to draw conclusions from this data.
• All varieties yielded well – especially given the below average growing season rainfall.
• All varieties had low test weight. Low test weights were also observed at the Marnoo site. The Minyip and Marnoo sites both had lower growing season rainfall and had grain discolouration as a result of rain damage before harvest, compared to the Rupanyup sites. These factors may have contributed to low test weights at the Minyip & Marnoo sites (harvested January 3 and January 6, 2004 respectively). 
• All varieties had protein levels above the malt receival standards of 12%. The high protein coupled with high yields at this site suggests high soil nitrogen levels.

The moisture probe network has been a great tool to teach growers in the region how to read moisture graphs and use this data to make informed managements decisions.  Growers can see how various urea application rates and stubble cover effect soil moisture.

• There was an effect of Moddus on plant height, the length of node interval and cell wall thickness when compared to the untreated area.

• A slight reduction in height can be seen throughout the trial. Samples of Corack (early-mid season), Mace (mid-season) and Justica (mid-late season) were taken from both the Moddus and untreated area.
• The Moddus did not affect the maturity of the varieties.

Allowing ewes access to some of the dual-purpose wheat sown on a mixed farm can increase gross margins
from the sheep operation by increasing stocking rates and the amount of lamb and wool produced and reducing supplementary feeding requirements.

• Grazing vetch and lucerne can be used as a management strategy to improve lamb dry matter intake and growth rates during the late spring and early winter feed gaps.
• The Grazfeed decision support tool has predicted that while both legume forages (vetch and lucerne) will increase methane output (gCH4/day), there is a reduction in methane output per unit of animal product (gCH4/day/100gADWG).
• Moisture limitations can affect herbage production of lucerne, which in turn reduces the chances of growing lambs to achieve the full potential dry matter intake in low rainfall mixed farming systems.

• The difference in soil organic carbon (SOC) changes between nine sites across eastern Australia was largely characterised by mean temperature and rainfall.
• High temperature strongly interacted with management practices (stocking rate, nitrogen application and residue incorporation) to reduce carbon sequestration despite favourable rainfall.
   

Slow pasture growth rates during winter limit the potential gross margins from autumn and early winter
lambing in southern New South Wales (NSW) by limiting stocking rates and/or increasing supplementary feed
requirements. Dual-purpose crops can reduce the winter feed gap in mixed-farming systems by increasing
the available feed in winter. The simulation software AusFarm was used to model a mixed-farming system
at Wagga Wagga with Merino ewes joined to terminal sires and grazing lucerne-subterranean clover pasture
over a 41-year period. A paddock of dualpurpose wheat was then added to the system, and ewes were
allowed to graze the wheat crop when feed on offer reached 850 kg DM/ha and before GS31.

Soil pH was 4.4 with low soil extractable Al; residual value would be expected to be less as soil pH decreases & Al increases

 A series of experiments started in late 1970'S to the earlier 1980 on very acidic yelllow sands that are deficient in Mo.  

Yellow  acidic sandy earths with  soil pH (CaCl2) of <4.5. Mo trioxide at nil, 140 & 280 g/ha was applied on original nil Mo plots.

Summary of the Mo on very acidic yellow soils:

 With ammonium nitrate the recommended rate of Mo (140 g Mo trioxide) was  inadequate for wheat grain 2 -3 years later.. 

Mo effectiveness rapidly declines with 2 to 3 years after the application.

A general conclusion for this experimental series:_  The residual effectiveness of Mo for cereal is likely to vary widely in different situations depending on soil pH, soil content of free iron, aluminium and manganese and the rate and type of nitrogen fertliser applied to the crop.

Critical Mo concentratin in wheat YEB s appeared to be 0.03 - 0.06 mg/kg. The evaluation of Mo in the YEB as a reliable tissue test but suggested continuing testing into future years.

Mo application of 1965 continued to supply Mo to the 1980 wheat crop, but with only about one-tenth the effect of the 1980. Ammonium sulfate depressed Mo uptake ; sodium nitrate enhanced uptake. With ammonium sulfate the recommended rate of Mo (140 g Mo trioxide) in 1965 appeared inadequate for wheat 15 years later.. 

Critical Mo concentratin in wheat YEB s appeared to be 0.03 - 0.05 mg/kg. The evaluation of Mo in the YEB as a reliable tissue test but suggested continuing testing into future years.

 

• On a low molybdenum soil the seed molybdenum concentration in the sown seed had no effect on the molybdenum concentration of the harvested seed.
• Application of nitrogen decreased seed molybdenum concentrations in a low molybdenum soil but not in an adequate molybdenum soil.

• Although the seed molybdenum content of maize is very low, there is a minimum critical level needed for healthy seedling growth.
• A seed molybdenum concentration of 0.02ppm is required for healthy seedling growth.
• Once the seedlings are established they become efficient extractors of molybdenum from soil.

UAV imagery with appropriate analysis has the potential to identify weed issues in paddocks quickly, reliably and cheaply over large areas.

• Six sites in north-east Victoria on acid duplex soils were sampled monthly to monitor manganese concentrations in soil and weed crops in relation to changing seasonal conditions.
• Cool and/or moisture conditions were associated with exchangeable manganese of less than 50 ppm.
• High concentrations of exchangeable manganese (120 – 250 ppm) were associated with waterlogging or prolonged hot dry conditions.
• The rate of increase in exchangeable manganese was greatest under waterlogged conditions in winter there was a lack of more than one month before significant increases were observed.
• Manganese concentrations in wheat tops reached 800 – 1200 ppm at the 3 sites most severely waterlogged during 1981.
• At the better drained sites the concentrations were less than 400 ppm.
• It seems that high levels of exchangeable manganese during summer have little effect on subsequent wheat crops.
• Waterlogging may result in increased concentrations of plant manganese but perhaps only in young plants or after prolonged exposure, by which time other effects of waterlogging may already have severely limited growth.

• Powdery mildew severity at the WMG field site, maximum of only 7% leaf area affected on Baudin, did not allow differences between varieties to be seen, other than VS and S types (Baudin, Stirling, Vlamingh, Gairdner)
• Laboratory seedling tests indicate that some of the genes postulated to provide resistance to powdery mildew in some commercial barley varieties may be compromised by some powdery mildew isolates.
• Field screening of these varieties has shown that local differences in variety responses can occur but no widespread regional variation, or ‘breakdown’ in the field resistance of varieties to powdery mildew was observed in 2013.
• The field response of commonly grown varieties at the WMG site and across the seven trials generally reflected the resistance rankings published in variety guides.
• The differences identified in 2013 were of minor impact, or occurred in non-commercially relevant varieties, however they indicate that regional differences in variety response are possible due to variability within the pathogen population and continued monitoring is important to facilitate appropriate disease risk assessment and in-crop management.
•  

• Sclerotinia stem rot is a very sporadic disease in southern NSW. Variations in the level of disease can occur between districts, between years and between paddocks.
• The best indicators of a high Sclerotinia risk district are a high intensity of canola production, frequent development of Sclerotinia stem rot (e.g. every year) and reliable spring rainfall during flowering.
• Results indicate that prolonged (at least 48 hours) durations of relative humidity above 95% can trigger Sclerotinia stem rot development.
• A high level of petal infestation with Sclerotinia ascospores does not guarantee that stem rot will develop.

• At both Corowa, NSW and Dookie, Victoria, there were significant yield responses to applied nitrogen (N), with maximum yields of 6.25t/ha at Corowa and 6.21t/ha at Dookie.
• Both sites gave identical unfertilised yields, averaging 4.67t/ha.
• Yield responses were associated with significantly higher dry matter (DM) production and greater nitrogen offtake when 120kg N/ha was applied at both sites.
• The maximum nitrogen offtake in the unfertilised crops at both sites equated to about 70–80kg N/ha, which was similar to the 95kg N/ha available to the crop at the start of the season at Corowa and the 65kg N/ha available at the start of the season at Dookie.
• The normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) response index (NDVI of fertilised:NDVI of unfertilised plots equal to 1.17) was measured at third node stage (GS33) and equated to maximum measured yield responses of 1.5–1.6t/ha to applied nitrogen.
• Applying an extra 60kg N/ha on top of the initial 60kg N/ha at Corowa (total 120kg N/ha) produced an average yield increase of 0.17t/ha (maximum 0.25t/ha), which was not cost effective (data not shown).
• At Dookie in 2016 applying 120kg N/ha gave greater returns and was economically worthwhile based on an extra 0.64t/ha for the additional 60kg N/ha applied (data not shown).

• Two first-wheat trials sown early-mid May showed significant increases in yield where nitrogen was applied. However, the timing of nitrogen application or whether the nitrogen was applied as a single or split application, gave no difference in yield.
• Normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) assessments showed no difference in crop reflectance (crop canopy greeness) due to timing of nitrogen application. However, there were NDVI differences due to the rates of nitrogen applied at the key growth stages (GS31 and GS33) where additonal nitrogen could still be applied to the crop to assist in reaching yield potential.
• Nitrogen timing had no effect on tiller and head numbers; however, a split application produced a taller crop canopy.
• Higher rates of nitrogen produced more dry matter (DM) and increased plant uptake of nitrogen, but the timing of application did not affect DM and nitrogen uptake.

The use of Monty’s Plant Food had no significant effect on wheat yield or quality.
